I like: Michael Pollan, David Brooks, Fareed Zakaria, Raymond Carver, wine, women, my hair long, good stories, playful language, Gabriel's Angels
And it always comes back to love for Jaco Pastorius (Birthday Concert, Live In New York series), Led Zeppelin, early King Crimson, Jethro Tull, the Meters, traditional music (of Appalachia, of Ghana, Mali, Zimbabwe, etc.), Glen Gould's solo piano Bach renditions, Tom Waits The Early Years, Fela Kuti, and Oumou Sangare amongst many others. There's love for the Chess Records sound, especially the mystery-rhythm groove of Willie Dixon and the ECM sound found with Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek.
I like Coltrane's Ballads, or almost every Wayne Shorter album. Bill Frisell and Kurt Rosenwinkle are great and the Miles Davis album, Sorcerer is superb.
In lyrics, I really like folk songs, how they lay out a story. I also like observation, detail and emotion in Joni Mitchell's Blue and Natalie Merchant's Tiger Lily. I'll always think Suzanne by Leonard Cohen to be the tops in craft of lyrics.
Other artists: Shakti, Jimi, Stan Getz/ Charlie Bird's Jazz Samba, Agents of Good Roots, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Braid, Schlong's Punk Side Story, Beethoven, James Jamerson, Digable Planets, Weezer, Tribe (Low End Theory, especially), The Roots, Gladiators Dreadlocks, The Time is Now, and Rage Against the Machine had such a tight rhythm section, didn't they?
GABRIEL CAPLAN, guitar leads & accompaniment, bass guitar, lyrics
"Exceedingly skillful and innovative lead guitar accompaniment by Gabriel X really added the right flourishing touches." Jezebel, "Jezeblog" review showcase, July 19th 2006.
I play a customized Telecaster from Ritchie's Guitar Shop with a bigsby tremolo and both a Seymour Duncon mini-humbucker in the neck, and his Vintage Broadcaster single coil in bridge. I use a 1999 Rivera Chubster 40 Watt tube amp and prefer a clean sound. When using pedals, I go for the Keeley line for its transparency; the Fuzz/Overdrive, Java Boost, modded Bd-2, Ts-808, Tr-2.
I also play bass with a killer Fender Squire Precision.
PERFORMANCE HISTORY
Performance history with Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens includes Fridays at Fat Cat, Celebrate Brookly 2009 (opening for Burning Spear), Ottawa Bluesfest 2009, WNYC Soundcheck, the 2008 Brooklyn Academy of Music TakeOver, Southpaw, Mercury Lounge and the Nokia Theatre (opening for Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings). I've played lead guitar for the Allstarz James Brown Tribute feat. Black Velvet at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival 2009, and for Pierre Kingston at the Harlem International Film Fest Reception Benefit and at the New Leaf Café. Bass guitar experience includes gigs with my brother's, Jason Caplan Quartet, headlining shows at Kenny's Castaways, the Elbow Room and colleges along the east coast with various projects.
My own projects include solo finger-picking guitar, a blues trio, and what with Apple being so keen on the everyday hobbiest, I like to take live recordings and splice 'em to old cartoons. This recording is, I believe, from 2007 with Jim Bracken on drums and Levent Baltaoglu on bass and the Spoken Word Cafe.
Hope you can make it out to DROM in the East Village, NYC on Sat. July 25th @ 7pm to join us for a fun night of the best of Tull as performed by WARCHILD!
hey man good to see you the other night at fat cat and the wine bar...im in north carolina playing a gig but when i get back we should link up and play!! -travis
