SOZE is:
TJ Mohney - vocals
Patrick Conroy - guitar/vocals
Joe Whetsel - bass
Tom Smalara - percussion/vocals
With their jazzy, upbeat jam style and catchy harmonies, SOZE is identifiable as one of the freshest new bands today. Their distinctive acoustic guitar sound combined with jazz drumming and funk bass is a welcome sound wherever people want to dance or just have a good time.
Soze consists of TJ Mohney (lead vocals), Patrick Conroy (guitar/back-up vocals), Joe Whetsel (bass), Tom Smalara (drums/back-up vocals). After the break up of their previous band, TJ and Patrick started looking for a rhythm section. That search ended when Patrick met his former co-worker Tom Smalara.
"Tommy is truly a Jazz musician at heart", says Patrick. Besides being the bands drummer, Tom also co-writes the band's original music with guitarist Patrick Conroy. "The types of songs we are writing, combine all of our musical influences, from Phish to DMB to Marvin Gaye to Miles Davis."-ts Tom is a longtime member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Society, and has performed with numerous local jazz musicians. As an added bonus, Tom brought his longtime friend Joe Whetsel to the bands first practice.
After the break up of his former band Pineshake, Joe started doing studio work for various bands around the Pittsburgh area. "I knew that Joe's style would add a whole new dimension to our songs", says Tom. "He just meshed so well with the sound we were going for."
Soze's music combines elements of rock, jazz, blues, and funk to form a very upbeat, body moving style of music. "We just want to see everybody dance and have a good time....We all love to play music together".-jw
I'm pretty sure I've heard you guys play somewhere. Can't quite place it though. Great music though, wish I could still catch a show. Have any of you moved on to different bands?
come to think of it...the above version of Where To Go was done on my show...not bad with only 5 microphones in a studio not set up for live performances, and with an engineer laying on the floor toying with the levels under the board :) (Thanks, Philly!)
Wow, I'm glad someone had the sense to make a MySpace page dedicated to one of my all time favorite Burgh bands (for a NUMBER of reasons!)
For the band members, thanks for all the memories, I'm glad I clicked on your website back in 1999, downloaded Where To Go, and got you guys down to Cal U for a few radio interviews and live shows. To the fans, we gotta make sure that this album never goes away, it's still in my top 10 all-time. I also still have the autographed drum cover that was given to me on my last on-air show when the guys came down for a visit, along with the Bear #! Soze jersey...they're both hanging in my room :)
I have a good amount of songs recorded live from my old local rock radio show on WVCS (now called WCAL) if anyone is interested. Songs they did on "The BearShow":
Set It Up, Open Door, Where To Go, Coming Home, Step Away, Margarita Girl, Eden, Parking Lot, 13 People and a GREAT rendition of Land Down Under.
I just talked to Patrick and he thought the idea of having a Soze MySpace was "very cool." :)
Rock on guys, and drop me a line sometime! Lemme know how you're doing!!
Any word from the missing guitar player? Is there any truth to the fact that there will be a reunion tour? I still have about half a box of CD's and some shirts!
and the unofficial 8th member (just behind Sarah and Matt) has arrived as well!! I miss all you guys, good times and good memories!! I owe a lot to TJ and Patrick especially, but all members and associates of SòZe for their wisdom, guidance, and their friendship!! - Gunga
