Band description
Soznak is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, and named after a middle eastern scale. Soznak plays rhythmic dance music from all over the world. At the core are a driving rhythm section of drums bass keyboards guitar congas and timbales and a brass section of trumpet trombone and saxes. Soznak often welcome visiting brass players and surprise celebrity guests. Firas Kirala features on the oud in Tyne Tigris confluence a tale of two rivers. Penny Callow ..o and Tim Dalling on accordian in Dear dad tango sung by Ulises Dias. Adrain Longo plays trumpet in Breath which is proving very popular with short filem makers.
Paco Bethencourt gave us a lovely falsetta introduction for Madrugada
go to the friends section and visit his band electro flamanco blending flamanco and geordie rap It is wild. I n ..The Morrocan.. Ulisess Diaz sings and plays percussion and percussion with Fergus paton on guitar.
Nkosana Mpofu performs Zulu poetry on ..sugar stick.. and Simon Tarant adds his african thumb piano to this track
The Soznak emphasis is eclectic:- funk, jazz, Latin middle- eastern fusions and Spanish and Caribbean and Afrocuban. Many of the tunes are original compositions in cross genre forms. We have avoided hip hop so far as we do not want a mulch of styles appropriated into the hip hop machine But it is tempting. So who knows
These Soznak tunes on myspace music are original work in progress for the album so do not be surprised to see them evove. Also they are NOT our party set. Please see below for our ever expanding list of party tunes.

• With a substantial leaning towards world music, particularly Afro- Cuban styles, you’ve got any enjoyable musical experience that might have problems getting past the jazz police, but makes for a foot-tapping Saturday night. Paul Bream Jazz North

BAND PLAN
The main current project is assembling an album (working title) ..Esperanto.. This features the band at the core but will also include many other friends and virtuosi accross a wide mixture of forms and genres including eg Iraqui Oud playing and Zulu poetry to mention two. The aim is to create a musical esperanto issuing from the multicultural society of Newcastle and the North east of England. To fuse Arabic, Jewish, African, latin Spanish and American Jazz styles in a new home made unique global style that brings all peoples together, especially those whose cultures have become polarised., and those who have become dislocated outsiders or political refugees. When the outsiders meet each other they can forge a new culture and enjoy a new home. Let hijaz meet montuna. We enjoy human variety and making the sound of Culture Clash. We attract an audiences of all ages for our home made street music.
In Durham we were joined by Tim Johnston on kit subing for Rus who is away on his hols. Thanks Tim and well done! We are feeling very excited about Berison Lutonda the lovely Angolan African vocalist and guitarist who has just joined the group. He sings beautifully with Nuala. This time of making is the best. We love it
