Spacebeard was conceived in early 2004 with the collaboration of Pete LaRussa on drums, guitar, and vocals, Joe Leone on guitar and vocals, and Andrea Verderame on bass. The trio began jam sessions, to channel their vast variety of influences and experiences. As jam sessions evolved the more serious and committed the trio became about forming a full-fledged band. It was then decided that Pete would work exclusively on guitar and vocals and that the band would seek out a full time drummer
While looking for a drummer, the members decided to record demos with Pete engineering the sessions so potential drummers could hear the bands sound. The first song born from these sessions was "Swords". Each member then brought their own song ideas to the table and the band would further collaborate on "Rock Culture", "Introduction Soon" and "Beards." These four songs became known as the "Original 4".
The ever-important question of "what do we call ourselves?" soon arose. The name Spacebeard originated from a long-standing running joke between Pete and Joe, after seeing Ace Frehley play with a "Spacebear" during an appearance on the "Tomorrow show with Tom Snyder". Being huge Kiss fans, the name stuck and a "D" was added at the end to pay homage to Joe's full beard he was sporting at the time.
After a long search, Pete Mags was recruited for drumming duties. His enthusiasm impressed the band so much; an offer to join was extended after only 1 jam session. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts kept the band from moving forward and the band amicably parted ways with Mags after only 1 year.
Dave Franko who also showed great potential joined the band shortly after Mags departure. With Dave on board, Spacebeard made its live debut at the "Wicked Monk,” in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, NY at the end of 2005. The band spent the early part of 2006 vigorously writing songs, and rehearsing its live performance. Dave departed the band due to creative differences and the band quickly found a replacement.
Spacebeard welcomed Brett Malas among their ranks in July of 2006. Brett's eagerness and passion was evident from the moment he began jamming with the trio. The Spacebeard line up was now complete and after some more intense rehearsing the band showcased at the Wicked Monk once again. Their first club gig at Ace of Clubs in NYC followed shortly after. The band continued to write and demo songs, one of them being the bands first collaboration with Brett called "Opportunity". After a few more shows the band hooked up with John Clemente at Terminal One Recording studios in Brooklyn, NY, and recorded their debut CD, "Specimen."
The album was released in October 2007, and the band spent the following month playing shows, including their first road trip gig to Lake George, and a benefit show at the Hard Rock Café in NYC.
