Beleagured history aside, the Space Heaters still live and thrive in Detroit and some of its more pleasant surroundings. If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you, some say, and the band, not originally of this planet, agrees. Michigan is surrounded by the largest source of fresh water in the world -- the Great Lakes, and that's the reason the Space Heaters settled in Detroit, the hub of it all. musically, socially and ergonomically, in spite of its desperate economy. The city's appearance is deceptively barren but rich in minerals needed to foster sonic abomination nee bliss. The little girls understand this. It did not take long for the Space Heaters to dwell.
Two parts Denizens, two parts Ramrods, two parts Boners, two parts Hysteric Narcotics and two parts Murder City Wrecks, the Space Heaters were born with eight parts, like a spider or an octopus. That's enough major parts to have the bulk of an engine already at hand, or at hands, we should say. And say we do,speaking in decibles.
Since our inception in the dawning years of the 21st Century, we have parted ways with Robert "Bootsey X" Mulrooney nee Bobby Beyond, but he remains at close reach as a spiritual guide. On disc and at live shows, the Space Heaters have also crossed paths with and made use of formidable Detroit talents such as Mark Niemenski, Fred Bergman, Pat "Scruff'" Shaw's partner Kristy Sue, blues belters and songbirds Muffy Kroha, Kate Feeny and Diane Schroeder and ace percussionist Billy Hafer, along with producer engineers Matt Downey and John Smerek and filmmaker Terrence Patrick Murphy aka The Whistling Monkey and Detroit artists Steve "Schteppe" Shaw and Michael Segal. Also aiding and abetting the Space Heaters are Dave "Machine" Hanna's fiance Dawn Funck and DD's bella Gypsy.
The Space Heaters have ended their hiatus, rested and now festering. The miraculous and more-than-welcome Cecelia Shaw, the cause of the hiatus, is now learning the drums and will be, for many years to come, a force to be reckoned with. This summer it took just 5 seconds to decide if the band should soldier on. The answer is YES.
The band most recently added powerhouse drummer Erin D' Detroit. A new 16-song cd release, tentatively titled "Under and Over the Influence" is due out momentarily.
All the Space Heaters do is LOVE motherfucking rock and roll, so, if you feel the same, make every effort to experience them. Who knows how long they will last. Eat them, smoke them, snort them, roll around in the mud with them, hold them, kiss them, dance with them, hug them, squeeze them and love them because they LOVE YOU, metaphorically speaking.
We'll see you at the rock'n'roll show! New Vaudville Forever, if you can dig that!
