March 18th 1957, Christer Fuglesang was born in Stockholm, Sweden.
08.47 pm, September 9:th 2006, he became the first Swedish man to travel to space.
At that moment he had traveled further than any other Swede had ever done before in history. For that we salute him.
But his way up to space wasn't easy, nor was it straight. After years of education and traveling between Cologne, Moscow and Houston, Christer Fuglesang belongs to the small group of people that has both astronaut and kosmonaut education.
He worked at the ground station for Mir in Kaliningrad, but always had his aim set for going further than that – space itself was the goal.
At this time he got his reputation as ”the astronaut that never gets to leave earth”.
Finally, he was taken out to be a part of the crew that was supposed to leave earth in the spring of 2003, but something unexpected happened - the Columbia accident.
Christer Fuglesang had to wait for almost four more years before he got such a chance again.
But in 2006 it was time. Right until lift-off it was uncertain if the space-shuttle STS-116 would take off because of bad weather, and back in Sweden a whole nation held its' breath.
But the weather got better and the spaceship took off. After years of waiting, Christer Fuglesang finally entered space and became the greatest Swedish adventurer of all times.
The album "For sardines space is no problem" by The Movements is dedicated to Christer Fuglesang, and astronauts and kosmonauts all over the world who continues to challenge our minds and beliefs.
