“Honesty has almost completely left hiphop- For me its all about conveying the truth so people can judge it for what it is and take what they need from it.”

According to Wikipedia, Clarity is the property of being clear or transparent. With his album Clarity, Tacoma, Washington rap artist Spaid is here to clear things up.

Co-Executive Producer and member Soul Gorilla/800 LB, the team that brought Seattle sensations Dyme Def to the world, his brand of street-based hiphop tells the truth and nothing but. With his new album, Spaid is here to testify in a way that’s sure to bring revival to rap as we know it; church!

“Even as a child, he was told all that tattling is punk shit
Now get your whining ass up out the kitchen
The way that I was raised
Taught me to take responsibility for my decisions
That’s what you niggas missing”

Combine the Swiss-precise, articulate dope delivery (no pun intended) of early Jay-Z, the back-to-the-wall, hustle-or-die ethic of vintage 50 Cent, and most of all- the gritty heart, the old-soul wisdom of Houston’s block emeritus Scarface; take all that and you just might have something like Spaid, simply one of the most compelling street narrators to emerge in recent years. This, combined with the killer trouble-man soul of Seattle’s keynote producer Vitamin D (who’s stirring chops expertly anchor the entire project’s sound), make Clarity a masterful, absolutely definitive work of street-hop from one of the finest in the Fresh Coast.

“I got love for the shit
Love when a brotha spit
It makes the whole Fresh Coast proud that they from this bitch!“

Originally hailing from the infamous Southside Jamaica Queens, Spaid brought his unmistakable NYC bop at an early age to his newfound home- Tacoma, Washington, a place known for it’s crime, drug, and gang activity since the mid-80s. “What’s Tacoma like? Bang-bang”, grins Spaid. The codes of the street govern Spaid’s raps as much as they do his every move- respect, responsibility; no surrender, no retreat.

“My father, my uncles, my brothers, my cousin
My homies, my enemies is hustlin’
Who doesn’t?”

Splitting time between pursuing music and his hustle, Spaid learned some hard lessons when things didn’t pan out as planned. His initial go at rap proving less than satisfactory, he took a hiatus from creating music to focus on the grind; after doing everything he had to, to provide for himself and his family, and more than proving himself in the streets as a shrewd businessman and accomplished hustla, Spaid found a new Clarity- and re-emerged, charged with a renewed inspiration, now seeing that he could realize his own dreams. Even still, Spaid is far from sleepwalking; he’s no slouch at revitalizing the time-honored tradition of gangsta rap’s inherent social commentary.

There’s no shortage of rappers (conscious-, street- or otherwise) speaking on things they’ve never done or seen- but Spaid’s authoritative bars speak not just volumes, but whole libraries. Authenticity-unlike everything else found in the streets- can’t be bought or sold, just won by experience; you just know it when you hear it. And the fact is- when you hear Clarity, you’ll know it: Spaid is the truth, and nothing but- so God help him.
