Amongst the plethora of underground groups that are striving to make their mark in the growing hip hop scene and culture of today, a crew of 4 emcees emerged from Orange County, California. This group goes by the name of 'Speach Impediments'. Each member is known for having their own distinct hallmark voice, and bringing unique perspective, rhymes and style to the table. When combined, this mixture creates an original sound that no other group has ever had or even attempted to create. Backed by an elite team of carefully chosen producers and the group's DJ (Zole), Speach Impediments have broken the mold of old tunes and played out "stereo-types" and have reshaped it; thus creating a new unique hybrid of old, as well as progressive sounds that can most likely be found in your friend's iPod. When asked about what type of genre Speach Impediments belong to, their answer would be "all of the above". No style is taboo for S.I., they have established a well rounded form of hip hop that refuses to be branded.
Since their formation in July of 2003, Speach Impediments have been on the grind non-stop. Between independent releases in the form of albums, mixtapes and vinyl, they have sold over 8,000 units to date. Some consider this to be a small number, but when pointing out they have never had legitimate distribution, the strength of their hustle becomes something worthy of applause. Speach Impediments have also received positive reviews in publications such as 'OC Weekly' and '8.5 Magazine', all without the hired help of a manager or publicist. Nearly every aspect of their careers have been conceptualized, negotiated, and executed in-house. Meaning they have never spent one penny hiring an outside agency to handle any business for them. All booking, consignments, interviews, and promotions have been set up completely independently.
Beyond what they capture in the studio, S.I. is notoriously known for their amazing, energy packed live performances. To date, they have done over 350 shows along with an independent tour which they booked and managed themselves. They have showcased their music from local coffee shops, clubs, and bars to well known venues such as House of Blues (Anaheim and Las Vegas), The El Rey, The Roxy, and B.B. King's (Universal City) to name a few. They have also shared the stage with renown hip hop artists such as Talib Kweli, KRS-ONE, Dilated Peoples, Hieroglyphics, and Sabac Red (Non-Phixion) whom they just recently featured on their first legitimate collaboration.
To say it simply, Speach Impediments are hungry, and they prove it with their continuous accomplishments. They have the experience, talent, and work ethic that it takes to make it in today's consolidated music industry. S.I. has independently made a name for themselves. And with the music and message they represent, it's only a matter of time before listeners and consumers world wide tune in to what they have to offer.
