Species 8472 is not a band. Species 8472 is an Internet-based project thats always under construction. Like the Star Trek creature from fluidic space whose name it borrows, its a shapeshifting beast which comes at you from everywhere at once.
Founded and directed by musicians Alasdair Wright and Clare O'Brien from their home in the Scottish Highlands, Species 8472 constantly adapts, reaching out and involving musicians and artists from other parts of the world and using the Internet to communicate, write and record. Participants are of all ages and ancestries, both genders but a common language - music.
Species 8472 exists to write, record and perform original music with a smattering of inventive covers. Released in the spring of 2006, Power Up was its first CD. Another one should be along soon.

About The Songs
Dissatisfaction is a song with lyrics & vocal by Clare, channelling a dark and distinctly adult version of Tinkerbell. There's always an adult story lurking under children's tales and folktales, and stylistically, this one is as much Angela Carter as J.M. Barrie.
My Heart's Hung Over is a song written & sung by Alasdair about how it feels to be drunk on fresh air. We live in a beautiful and wild region of Scotland. 'Nuff said.
Shadow On The Sun is a complete reinvention of Audioslave's anthemic rock ballad, recast as a traditional Scots lament. Local music teacher Beth Hunter contributed a gorgeous vocal and played the gaelic harp, or clarsach.
A Tripwire features Clare's lyrics set to an old 6/8 musical figure which Alasdair had stuck in his head. It features Irish singer Susanna Wolfe and is all about those weird hinged moments when a door opens and a new phase of your life begins. It can feel like being tripped up.
Clare says Scarburst is about old wounds, old blood which rises to the surface when you least expect it. Alasdair got a bit Nine Inch Nails with it.
Finally, Green Sky is a seven-and-a-half minute epic, a Russian short story by Natalia Kutsepova set to music by Alasdair. Natalia's shimmering vocal performances are far too rare, but she also takes beautiful photographs.

Scarburst...is a mishmash of industrial beats, but which subside to a decided croon in the Scott Walker/Jack L vein, which sets the tone for the rest of the album.. Introspective and downbeat are the watchwords for sure, but what Wright and O'Brien have is a massive ability for songwriting, all in the Talk Talk / Tindersticks vein from the cusp of the 80s/90s, but musically landing on the credible side of that godforsaken era. If the sound and delivery are dark, then the lyrics vanish into an emotional crypt... A keen interest in the elements, perhaps aptly given their location, as emotions are laid bare in the cold then warmed by the flames of an open fire.

With a name that could as well be a new Star Trek spin off show, Species 8472 take the artier moments of Kate Bush and blend them into a synergy of spiralling piano notes and beats that stretch and curl up like a frightened hedgehog. If only we could hear clearly under water as this would be perfect swimming music, but even in the open air this is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Species 8472...absolutely brilliant band. They're a bit different...I first of all played them on the show a wee while ago and they're absolutely wonderful. Alasdair Wright and Clare O'Brien...there's a lovely wee tune, A Tripwire, a grand tune that'll wake you's all up. They've got an album out...Power Up, go and buy it. Fantastic voice that girl's got. Absolutely stunning.

My best friend Mark Williams (a.k.a.) Admiral Kirk needs your vote to win a Star Trek: TOS Captain's Chair in the final round of the Roddenberry. com's 2008 Member of the Year contest. Mark and I "Gary (a.k.a.) Mr. Spock" are best known for our "Kirk And Spock" shows that we put on at conventions. The 2008 STARBASE INDY convention on Thanksgiving weekend featured us as part of their main entertainment. We had performed "Spock's Brain". I hope that we can get the video of our performance on YouTube in the near future. Another great reason to vote for Mark is that I only live a few miles from his house! After all, I have been and always shall be his friend.
My profile now has vast amounts of Star Trek information about conventions and joining the official Starfleet Command. Just click on any of the banners "pictures" and they will take you directly to that link. It's that easy with no copying and pasting. If you are 21 or older you might consider joining Barfleet which is the wild party side of the Star Trek clubs. There are 4 places to click on to get an application to join the Official Starfleet Command: my blog contains an application or click on any of the three pictures of ( big circle with Starfleet Command logo), ( Starfleet Command Uncle Sam) or (tricorder with applications next to it). They will bring up a PDF file. Just copy it, fill it out and mail it in. I also have many Star Trek conventions listed. Again, just click on the banner (picture) and it will take you to that site. This is a video with my fellow crew member of the USS Endeavour. It shows us at different events. I'm in it at several points and if you watch closely, you'll see me portraying Data next to a Vulcan who is now our ship's captain.
