.. .. ..MyGen.. ..Profile Generator.. ...... ..Species 8472.. is not a band. Species 8472 is an Internet-based project thats always under construction. Like the Star Trek creature from fluidic space whose name it borrows, its a shapeshifting beast which comes at you from everywhere at once. .. .. Founded and directed by musicians Alasdair Wright and Clare O'Brien from their home in the Scottish Highlands, Species 8472 constantly adapts, reaching out and involving musicians and artists from other parts of the world and using the Internet to communicate, write and record. Participants are of all ages and ancestries, both genders but a common language - music. .. .. Species 8472 exists to write, record and perform original music with a smattering of inventive covers. Released in the spring of 2006, ..Power Up.. was its first CD... Another one should be along soon... .. Species 8472 is music from nowhere. .... ..About The Songs...... Thought you might like to know a bit more about the songs. More will be appearing soon...as soon as we finish them, that is.....! .... ..Dissatisfaction.. is a song with lyrics & vocal by Clare, channelling a dark and distinctly grown-up version of Tinkerbell. There's always an adult story lurking under children's tales and folktales, and stylistically, this one is as much Angela Carter as J.M. Barrie. .... ..No Robbery.. is a bit of a mystery, even to us. It's about entrapment, and bewilderment, and barley-sugar flame. Fair exchange. .... ..My Heart's Hung Over.. is a song by Alasdair about how it feels to be drunk on fresh air. We live in a beautiful and wild region of Scotland. 'Nuff said. .... ..Wild Sapphires Bloom.. is about springtime, renewal, and hope. The idea came from several sources, one of which was an old children's book by Alan Garner. .... Species 8472 doesn't often do covers - that's Black Cherry's bag - but here's a complete reinvention of Audioslave's anthemic ..Shadow On The Sun.., recast as a traditional Scots lament. Local music teacher Beth Hunter contributed a gorgeous vocal and played the gaelic harp, or clarsach. .... ..The Snowglobe.. was suggested by a more or less random collection of words which came into Clare's mind in that odd penumbral state between waking and sleeping. They were "Breathing Out Becomes White And Snowfall." More about that ..here... .... ..A Tripwire.. features Clare's lyrics set to an old 6/8 musical figure - and an old title - which Alasdair had stuck in his head. It features Irish singer Susanna Wolfe and is all about those weird hinged moments when a door opens and a new phase of your life begins. It can feel like being tripped up. .... ..I Wore You Like A Glove.. is a love song. Simple as that, really. .... Clare says ..Scarburst.. is about old wounds, old blood which rises to the surface when you least expect it. Alasdair got a bit Nine Inch Nails with it. .... Finally, ..Nightfall.. is a strange story about an old woman standing by an open window, looking out over the dark water of a loch at night. Something is coming home. .... Click on the banner and download our track! .... ........ .... ..PRESS.. .. .. ..Scarburst.....is a mishmash of industrial beats, but which subside to a decided croon in the Scott Walker/Jack L vein, which sets the tone for the rest of the album.. Introspective and downbeat are the watchwords for sure, but what Wright and O'Brien have is a massive ability for songwriting, all in the Talk Talk / Tindersticks vein from the cusp of the 80s/90s, but musically landing on the credible side of that godforsaken era. If the sound and delivery are dark, then the lyrics vanish into an emotional crypt... A keen interest in the elements, perhaps aptly given their location, as emotions are laid bare in the cold then warmed by the flames of an open fire. .. .. - Donald Bush, ..Is This Music?.... .. .. With a name that could as well be a new Star Trek spin off show, Species 8472 take the artier moments of Kate Bush and blend them into a synergy of spiralling piano notes and beats that stretch and curl up like a frightened hedgehog. If only we could hear clearly under water as this would be perfect swimming music, but even in the open air this is the stuff that dreams are made of. .. ..- Jeremy Chick, ..Subba-Cultcha.com.... .. .. Species 8472...absolutely brilliant band. They're a bit different...I first of all played them on the show a wee while ago and they're absolutely wonderful. Alasdair Wright and Clare O'Brien...there's a lovely wee tune, ..A Tripwire.., a grand tune that'll wake you's all up. They've got an album out.....Power Up.., go and buy it.
