about series 1.5 sock puppet portraits:
the super speculex bros. are from the elusive series 1.5 sock puppet portraits by marty
like so many of their brethren (and sistren), they are a part of the sock puppet (and human) rock band, uncle monsterface
unlike so many of their fellow puppets, the series 1.5 sock puppet portraits were created specifically for chicago's art source gallery's 2007 exhibition, 'under 5 feet,' originally printed and sold at 11"x14". but now they are available for sale on the mean streets of nyc, along with marty's 82 billion other sock puppet portraits in their little 2"x3"(and occasionally bigger) frames.
further separating these kids from their earlier peers, the series 1.5 puppets have 'family' myspace profiles(the series 1 sock puppet portraits can be found in the top friends, below - each one of THESE guys filled out their OWN profile - as will the forthcoming SERIES 2 sock puppet portraits). the family portraits from series 1.5 couldn't agree on which specific puppet might get to fill out each profile, so they convinced me to just write their collective stories for them.
as to the the speculex bros.:
glumf, harold, and zephyr speculex are three brothers who couldn't be more different, but they are drawn together by their mutual love of, and dependence upon, eyewear. with only a year between each of them, they are very much prone to equal parts love and squabbling. bring up any other topic and the three brothers will devolve into fisticuffs quicker than a cat on something that makes a cat go very fast, but keep them talking about eyeglasses and they'll be pleasant as pleasant can be (which i hear is rather pleasant).
the eldest brother, glumf speculex, is also the most conservative of the three. a financial analyst and nationally-known amateur etymologist, his is very much the stern, nearly paternal, and often grumpy hand of the eldest of three brothers. his eyeglasses expertise tends to lean towards the rich history of eyewear, rattling off ocular factoids with alarming precision.
the beloved middle brother, harold speculex, is easily the most affable of the three. very much the peacemaker, middle child harold is also an accomplished scientist and model plane enthusiast. as suits his professional leanings, his eyeglasses expertise tends to be along the lines of the complex science of spectacles, as well as the fascinating science behind eyes and perception.
youngest brother, zephyr speculex is the doted upon 'creative one'. a graphic designer by day and amateur costume designer by night, he is very much the consummately chic and perpetually young new yorker. known locally for his unparalleled carrot cake recipe, zephyr knows the most about the fashion behind the eyewear, particularly at its most contemporary and cutting edge.
