Fiddler's Green are about to strike again – ready for a new and buzzing game!
This record's predecessor, the high-energy Drive Me Mad! album, had all the
potential to appeal to the band's regular following and attract new fans at the
same time. Now the reformed band is back on stage as well as in the recording
studio. Never change a winning team! - this is the clear message calling the
shots on Sports Day at Killaloe, the new Fiddler's Green album.
For two decades, the band has delivered wave after wave of tireless energy
attacks, but with the addition of singer/guitarist Pat (Let's rock this, guys!), the
band has achieved a unique degree of smooth and straight-to-the point capability
that is clearly evident in Bugger Off, the punky opener that hits with a force
leaving none but one decision to the referee. It is on this ground that the Irish
Speedfolk brand is celebrated in the most convincing shape the band's history
has seen yet.
And this is not surprising, because all 19 (!) songs on Sports Day At Killaloe,
including the lead vocals, were recorded live in the studio to result in a total of
about one hour, with the motto "Get out there and do your very best!" clearly in
mind at all times. The Score: This is the band at its finest. The new release
features an abundance of new compositions and a handful of catchy traditionals
– raw and unrelenting in Life Full Of Pain, highly energetic in Strike Back,
playful in 7 Drunken Sailors or in the shape of a pulsating reggae tune
(Change).
In-between there are sombre and quieter parts with a melancholy air that allow
the listeners to catch their breath (Down By The Hillside, Apology), then song
jewels such as Empty Pockets, Empty Fridge or Bottom Of Our Glass, which
have all the potential to reach classic status, pump up the pulsebeat to highest
levels in no time.
With to-the-point precision and force the ball is passed across the field with
astonishing confidence, Sports Day At Killaloe: An ear-busting power load that
descends on the listener with the full energy of a live performance.
Following a surprisingly short debate, the motley jury make their decision: What
is at work here is a group that is not ashamed of its raw and punky roots and
who succeeds in a smart and down-to-earth manner to sound fresher and more
energetic than ever before, and – you guessed it – we solemnly promise to push
the levels even higher during the Sports Day Tour 2009.

Ließ bereits der Vorgänger Drive Me Mad! durch seine unerhörte Frische alte Fans aufhorchen und neue hinzuströmen, zeigt sich nunmehr nach zwei weiteren Jahren in Neubesetzung live wie im Studio: Never change a winning team! – so die glasklare Quintessenz aus Sports Day At Killaloe, dem neuen Album von Fiddler's Green.
Unermüdlich powert die Band bereits seit fast zwei Jahrzehnten Runde um Runde, doch mit Sänger/Gitarrist Pat („Das muss rocken, Jungs!“) hat sie sich inzwischen eine derart lässig-treffsichere Routine erspielt, dass bereits der punkige Startschuss Bugger Off dermaßen knallt, dass das Schiedsrichterurteil eindeutig ausfällt: Auf diesem Rasen tritt die Marke Irish Speedfolk innerhalb der Bandgeschichte in ihrer bisher geschlossensten Formation an!

Spielergebnis: Diese Band schafft, topfit wie sie ist, auch auf dem aktuellen Album verblüffend locker den Spagat zwischen einer Fülle an Eigenkompositionen neben einer Handvoll markiger Traditionals – mal roh und unbehauen wie in Life Full Of Pain, kraftstrotzend in Strike Back, verspielt in 7 Drunken Sailors, oder beschwingt als Reggae (Change).
Zwischendurch lassen düster-melancholische Verschnaufpausen den Zuhörer kurzzeitig durchatmen (Down By The Hillside, Apology), dann wieder pumpen Songperlen wie Empty Pockets, Empty Fridge oder Bottom Of Our Glass – schon jetzt im Trikot moderner Genreklassiker – den Puls im Nu wieder auf Hochleistungsniveau. Hart und punktgenau spielt man sich hier mit traumwandlerischer Sicherheit die Bälle zu. Sports Day At Killaloe: ein ohrenbetörendes Powerpaket, das – einmal aufgeschnürt – seine geballte eingefangene Liveenergie gnadenlos entlädt.
