Researching blues, folk, and Celtic music, and collecting obscure recordings and bootlegs...living in rural heaven in the wilds of County Galway with my wife and my animals.... walking my three dogs on lonely forestry roads at dusk 'til dark, and then going for an early pint...the buzz of returning to the big cities now and again for gigs and to see friends and family...talking to the great old characters round here and learning the history of the area and the family connections....playing Irish music in a late night session with a bunch of guys with an average age of over 70 - and leaving the pub at 2 a.m....
Music
Bob Dylan, Country Joe McDonald, Jackie Leven (WHY IS THIS MAN NOT A SUPERSTAR?????), Kelly Joe Phelps, Richard Thompson, John Otway, Judee Sill, Ron Kavana (one of the most underrated artistes ever), Shane MacGowan & The Pogues, The Popes, Nic Jones, Fairport Convention, John Hiatt, The Ramones, Frank Zappa, Altan, The Byrds, Gene Parsons, Terry Allen, Hot Tuna, Jorma Kaukonen, The Muffin Men, Mike West & Truckstop Honeymoon, Robyn Hitchcock, They Must Be Giants, Little Feat, Ry Cooder...........oh, God, everyone who's ever graced my record collection.....
Movies
Paris, Texas - the greatest film ever made. Bunuel's "Un Chien Andalou"- the weirdest film ever made. "Woodstock" the greatest doucementary music movie ever made. "Renaldo & Clara" - as Dylan made this film on so many levels I'm convinced even HE didn't know what it was about in the end....
Television
What's one of those? Oh, yeah, the thing that my DVD machine is connected to....
Books
I'm a voracious reader, and love biographies, especially anything about sixties culture - anything by Clinton Heylin (because he entertains and infuriates me in equal measure, being in turn incredibly well informed or totally wrong!), Brian Hinton because he's a superb writer, and Alan Clayson because not only is his knowledge outstanding but his prose is wonderful, and Lester Bangs because he was just plain barking mad. Also Bob Dylan for "Chronicles" (but not for "Tarantula" - well, O.K., bits of it are pretty good), the travel writer Eric Newby, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Ian Rankin, Robert Rankin, Graham Hurley, Michael Moore, Hunter S. Thompson, John Steinbeck, Flann O'Brien, Ben Elton, Dylan Thomas, Brendan Behan, Ken Kesey, Irvine Walsh, Ian Banks etc etc. etc....
Heroes
Bob Dylan, the great mountaineer Henrich Harrer, A.Wainwright - the finest cartographer of English mountains ever, A.J. Weberman for singlemindness above the call of duty, Francis O'Neill - collector of the greatest collection of Irish music back in the last century, Arthur Rimbaud, Woody Guthrie, John Lydon - for always doing EXACTLY what he wants to do, Shane MacGowan - for still being alive despite everyone's doom and gloom predictions over the last twenty years, and Country Joe McDonald - for just being Joe....
