Formed in Hollywood, California in 1990 by LIZZIE GREY and TIMOTHY JAY - former members of both Lizzie Grey-founded bands - ULTRA POP and LONDON (who included at one time or Nikki Sixx/MOTLEY CRUE, Izzy, Steven, Slash/GUNS N ROSES, Fred Coury/CINDERELLA and Blackie Lawless/WASP et al), SPIDERS & SNAKES quickly became a hit in the U.S. Glam, Glitter Rock and “Hair Metal” underground music scene. Their debut 1992 release ARACHNOMANIA made it to the import charts in Japan, fueled by major radio airplay by the infamous Masa Ito and rave reviews in the Japanese press such as BURRN magazine. Mixing heavy guitars and big drums with melodic pop vocals and Beatles-like vocal harmonies, SPIDERS & SNAKES eventually broke out beyond Japan and the U.S. and into the international music circuit via their mid-90’s music video for the ballad called "Lost For Words" sung and filmed in both English and Spanish. Their 1994 album 2000 RETRO was released by RKD RECORDS thru RED/SONY DISTRIBUTION and MTV picked up the Spanish version of the video for major airplay worldwide. Respected magazines such as Hit Parader and RIP compared the band to an early SWEET, T. REX, THE NEW YORK DOLLS and early ALICE COOPER. After back to back releases - 1995’s ODDITIES: THE GLITTER YEARS (which contained a mini science fiction paperback inside) and and 1997’s ASTRO POP (a punk-pop glitter rock album rivaling GREEN DAY for its catchy pop melodies) - the band was approached in 1999 to contribute their version of the Lizzie Grey-penned “Public Enemy 1” to a MOTLEY CRUE tribute album to be released by the Los Angeles record label CLEOPATRA RECORDS. In 2000 the band eventually signed on with the label to release their 5th album LONDON DAZE. A much heavier rock sound then their previous efforts, the 13 song album featured 3 bonus tracks with Nikki Sixx from MOTLEY CRUE (recorded earlier in his career). In 2006, SPIDERS & SNAKES signed their first Asian Record deal with BIG M.F./Zain Records in Tokyo, JAPAN releasing the album "Hollywood Ghosts" which featured tracks with Angelo Moore from FISHBONE on saxophone. "Hollywood Ghosts" includes a bonus DVD with over 15 music videos (live and studio) that drew international rave reviews in respected press comparing SPIDERS & SNAKES to an early DAVID BOWIE, the British glam rock band MOTT THE HOOPLE, T-REX and even THE BEATLES. Soon to be featured in a Cleopatra Records documentary feature film about the Hollywood Sunset Strip rock scene called “Hollywood Rocks“, SPIDERS & SNAKES are currently recording their eighth (8th) album entitled "Melodrama" with producer GAVIN ROSS (FISHBONE, TRACII GUNS from LA GUNS) in Burbank, California and are hoping to eventually tour in Asia in 2007.
SPIDERS & SNAKES TURN UP THE DRAMA (27 September 2007 - Los Angeles, CA)
Los Angeles Glam rock icons SPIDERS & SNAKES are set to release their eighth studio album, ’Melodrama’, on November 6th through Corporate Punishment Records (distributed by Koch Entertainment). Corporate Punishment Records founder, Thom Hazaert, contacted the band directly thru their website and ensuing conversations led to a deal which would see Corporate Punishment Records releasing not one, but THREE albums by the notorious Hollywood rockers! (reissues of ’London Daze’ and ’Hollywood Ghosts’ are also included in the deal). “We are extremely proud to be affiliated with a band like SPIDERS & SNAKES. Lizzie Grey is one of the true unsung Godfathers of Modern Hard Rock, and an incredible talent, as well as a true inspiration as one of those rare people who TRULY makes music because he loves to.” said CPR President Thom Hazaert. “And while it’s a little left field of the usual CPR release(s), S&S has made a 15 year career out of releasing brilliant, pure records, solely for the love of their craft, and it’s definitely an honor to be a part of that.” The twelve tracks on offer highlight the band’s affinity for 70’s glam rock indulgence and his knack for writing hooks as wide as the Atlantic Ocean. Featuring a stunning cover of the Bay City Rollers’ classic "Yesterday’s Hero" (sung by drummer Timothy Jay), and highlighting Sluggo (of OINGO BOINGO fame) on a terrific saxophone solo, ’Melodrama’ also sees SPIDERS & SNAKES covering themselves with "Fear Of Flying" which originally appeared on the band’s 1992 release ’Arachno II’, with rewritten lyrics by SPIDERS & SNAKES co-founder Jay, The band has written a wealth of material for the new album, including tracks such as the Cheap Trick inspired "Shoot Me Down" (written and sung by bassist Phil St. Vincent), the in your face hard rocker "Kicks", and the melancholic ballad, "Another Lonely Day" With the release of ’Melodrama’ SPIDERS & SNAKES will be taking the new album to the masses with touring planned both on domestic ground as well as throughout the European territories in 2007 and 2008.
