Spin-17 is an experimental duo project formed by Ed Chang (Electornics, guitar,sax, the noise machine) and Motoko Shimizu (voice, turntable, toys, percussions, guitar).
Spin-17 often collaborates with other musicians as well as solos and other projects: Dual (Ed Chang and Doug Theriault), Agents at Midnight (Ed Chang and Ed Howard), Lust Ionics (Spin17 and Adam Kriney) and so on.
Influences
The effect of diverse influences from Mauricio Kagel to Warner Brothers cartoon soundtracks to early Siouxie and the Banshees can be heard like a diamond in the eye.
Spin-17 mixes improvisation with experimental composition. Since it was
found in 1997, Spin-17 has performed the NYC venues(Tonic, Knitting
Factory,Roulette, CBGB's ) as well as the three U.S. tours.
In 2005, Spin-17 started producing a monthly concert series at 226 East
2nd St ..5D, the "226 Series/The Foundry". Each month in an intimate
setting sound artists presents new works designed for small spaces and
concentrated listening.
Spin-17 has performed with Donald Miller, Sabir Mateen, Daniel Carter,
Matthew Heyner, Samara Lubelski, Blaise Siwula, Jeffrey H Shurdut, the
Gold Sparkle Band, Matthew Sullivan, Toshi Makihara and Michael Evans
as well as the late European bassist Peter Kowald.
