Hakkımızda WNYC's Spinning On Air with David Garland
Sunday, October 7, 2007 at 7 pm, at Joe's Pub
Spinning On Air's 20th Anniversary Live Broadcast from Joe's Pub brings together three very individual songwriters whose passionate voices communicate their musical visions: Larkin Grimm, a young Appalachian shaman/troubador who has a voice to conjure with; Bridget St. John, veteran British songwriter with a special knack for disarming intimacy; and David Deporis, a wild-eyed Brooklyn-based singer of tenderness, rage, and rue. Each performer has presented their music on Spinning On Air before, and now each will have the opportunity to play for the live Joe's Pub audience and WNYC-FM's listeners in this event which marks the 20th anniversary of Spinning On Air. Giving exposure to underexposed artists is one of the show's missions. Join us at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette Street, NYC! Lots of info, and tickets ($15) here.
Spinning On Air crosses musical boundaries in quest of the fire ignited by the interaction of Art and Pop. Hailed by the New York Times as a bright spot on the New York radio dial, the show is broadcast on WNYC-FM 93.9 and wnyc.org Sunday evenings from 7 to 8 pm. Recently Spinning On Air has emphasized in-studio performances by passionate, personal, adventurous songwriters such as Sufjan Stevens, Antony and the Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, Juana Molina, Akron/Family, Animal Collective, and many others. Spinning On Air has been ahead of the curve in presenting and premiering work by such artists, who have gone on to wide acclaim and attention. Listening to Spinning On Air is a discovery, with producer/host David Garland as curator and advocate generally giving the whole hour to a particular theme or artist (usually musicians, but occasionally innovators in other arts). Garland is an intelligent, inquisitive, and articulate interviewer, and his interaction with bold and thoughtful guests performing and talking about their creativity adds up to a show that is itself intelligent, exciting, ear-opening, and uniquely engaging.

Sponsored by Electronic Musician Magazine and the Manhattan Producers Alliance, in conjunction with Big Fish Media, the highlight of the festival will be screenings of “I Married a Monster from Outer Space” (1958) and the “The Taking of Pelham 123” (1974), followed by discussions of the pieces and “re-visioned” interpretations by The Code Ensemble, led by Grammy-winner Steve Horowitz, best known for his work with “Super Size Me” director Morgan Spurlock. Among the newer pieces presented are “The Re-Taking of Pelham 123”, a short film re-vision of the original movie, which played to rave reviews at the Kitchen a few years ago, and the debut of “Invasion from the Chicken Planet,” a hilarious re-vision of “I Married a Monster” and other classic Sci-fi, complete with live actors and the 12-piece Code Ensemble. A portion of festival proceeds will go to benefit SoundBites music camp for children.

Rest In All Love Is
------------------
I love you like this...
dark, i can barely see your eyes...
so dark my eyes are useless. My
heart opens wide its light on you
and your face brightens like the
static on a TV screen, or like the moment
we die and things begin to go all white
and
then
you're an angel laying before me...
the same one that has been there all along,
the one my eyes turned into something else and I
am ashamed I was deceived.
Then,
I see you, I see you like the energy that flows through my limbs,
now, like the breath that takes the universe and
gently creates another, now, like my feet walking
on glass, now, like I was never there.
I love you like I was never there. So gently, never there. In the dark
where I can barely see, and, rest in all that love is.
