The band Spiral Jetty started out on the post-punk scene in 1981, taking its name from an earthwork in the Great Salt Lake, created in the early '70s by the artist Robert Smithson.
Singer/song-writer/guitarist Adam Potkay and bassist Andy Gesner started playing out together in clubs in 1980 at the New Jersey shore; relocating the next year to Ithaca, NY, the band was joined by David Reynolds on drums. Based in New Jersey since 1983, Spiral Jetty still consists of Potkay, Gesner, and Reynolds, joined from time to time by a stalwart line of second-guitarists, keyboardists, and back-up singers.
Spiral Jetty has released five albums, beginning with 'Tour of Homes' (Incas, 1986), vinyl release with three tracks produced by Hoboken legends the Feelies. Brad Morrison served as the band's producer on its next three albums: 'Art's Sand Bar' (Incas, 1987); 'Dogstar' (Absolute a Go Go/Rough Trade, 1988); and 'Band of Gold' (Enemy/Brake Out, 1992). In 1997 the band did its last round of studio recordings, which appear, along with tracks from the band's first three albums and previously unreleased materials, on the compilation 'Begin Responsibilities' (Hedgehog Records 2000).
The drive home from The Feelies' show at Maxwell's last night was fuelled by loud spins of "Tour Of Homes" and "Big Downhill Racing"... New Jersey Uber Alles!
Thanks for the add! I had heard of you guys many many years ago around the time I saw the Feelies open for REM in '86, but somehow lost touch. I found you guys again through Jared of WRSU. Love the music... I'm hoping I can track down some of your vinyl.
cheers and please do some shows soon! happy new year! Ed
All hail Absolute A Go Go brethren!!! Was immensely thrilled to stumble on BEGIN RESPONSIBILITIES a while back - great stuff, front to back. Please - another reunion show!!!?
Great to hear "Another Spy Song" for the first time in years. Would love to hear "Playground" or whatever that instrumental with bongos is called ("Blacktop?") if you've got it recorded.
