Spiral Tower was formed after Ben and Phil's previous band Mourning Wood disbanded in October of 2005. Still wanting to push things forward with technical metal, they got together with Andrew O'Hara (Razz) who's previous bands include GodKillsAmerica and Hecate Enthroned. The three piece practised for a short time writing their first song (popular to preston) Man Made Tree. However, it soon became apparent the band wanted to take more a progressive route with the songs and contacted Tom Harrison (Harry) who had played keyboards in the local prog band Glimpse Of Void which disbanded the previous year.
The first few songs, including Man Made Tree, Whispers of a Nameless Voice, The Ones In Between and A Feeling Of, were written before the battle of the bands gigs in the summer of 2006. These songs were comprised of mixture of recycled Mourning Wood riffs/ideas and a desire to combine Death's last four albums with Genesis' first four albums.
The next set of songs which now more reflect the band better were written around a concept which came to light after that summer, the story started coming together about the Spiral Tower relating to the band name. Some of the songs can only be found on Bootlegs of recent gigs apart for the ones that have been recorded at Razs home studio. The songs (Keith's Contraption and A.R.C.D.U.[generally referred to as "robot song" or something similar]) have seen the band take a more technical and varied route, mixing in a much wider variety of influences. This trend has been continuing through the new non-concept material.
This is a story the band has created, around which we were writing a concept album (a kind of Alice in Wonderland style story, except it's more like a Keith in Weirderland); however, we have realised that attempting a concept album at this stage is not the wisest of ideas. For one, we want to write some songs that can stand alone lyrically and musically, and secondly we don't really have time to do a full concept album considering how long it takes us to learn and write songs. It's decided that we're going to keep chipping away at it but we're not going to let it get in the way of other material, and it will all find its way into the open in instalments whilst we write other stuff. So far we have written the following songs: Answers, Keith's Contraption, A.R.C.D.U. (aka The Robot song), and the new one FOREST (We'll keep updating this list as we write more songs). If this little bit has piqued your interest, and you are now dying to read this mighty saga then fear not- it will be put up on the myspace in the blog section. All artwork on this site is original and ties in with the concept so have a look at that as well.
