Spirit of the Youth’s mission is to create unity, peace, and recovery of self-identity in order to improve the quality of life of Indigenous peoples of Americas, not only for our generation but also for the future generations to come. We will achieve this by working with the Youth Declaration on an International level. This will allow for cultural exchange between Indigenous peoples of Americas, while reinforcing each individual's cultural identity. As Indigenous youth we will embrace the wisdom and guidance of our elders and leaders who carry us forth within Indigenous communities.

Who I'd like to meet: HISTORY OVERVIEW
Unity Rides and Runs were initiated in 1986 by the Lakota Elders of North and South Dakota who heeded Black Elk’s Vision of The Sacred Hoop; a vision that their Nation had been broken after the Wounded Knee massacre of 400 men, women and children in 1890. Their visions showed them that they must retrace the path of their ancestors and “wipe their tears” for the seventh generation to have a better life. Since 1986, hundreds of men, women, and children have journeyed on horseback and ran thousands of miles to retrace their ancestor’s footsteps and pray for the healing of our Nations. In 2000, they determined that they would ride and run towards Iroquoian territory and honor the Haudenosaunee “Great Tree of Peace”, the symbol known throughout the Americas as unity and strength.
In 2004 the Unity Ride and Run arrived on Six Nations Territory to commence the “2004 International Indigenous Elders Summit”. The continuation of the Unity Ride and Run was then passed on to the youth of Six Nations for the duration of a four year cycle.
In 2005, Spirit of the Youth Working Group successfully traveled by foot from Six Nations Territory ON to Onondaga Territory near Syracuse NY.
2006 Unity Run
On July 17th, 2006 the caravan of runners travelled in a relay fashion, from Onondaga Territory (near Syracuse NY) to Akwesasne Territory (near Cornwall ON), while stopping at other territories such as Oneida NY, Tyendanaga ON, Kahnawa:ke QC, Kanehsata:ke QC, and Kanien:ke QC. The group travelled, on average, 60-100 km each day and made stops at communities/campsites to rest, covering a total of approximately 650 miles. Upon arrival into the different communities, the caravan of runners wern by the nation and longhouses, featuring Keith Secola, and the Akwesasne Women's Singers.

Hey guys - can't wait to see you all again --- I hear you will be at Pamunkey on June 27 - I need details - e-mail me or send me some info thru here....good luck and let me know how I can help....
I remember the early morning prayers, the road ahead of us. I remember the brief struggle to wake each morning. The longer struggle to just keep running, suffering a bit longer so the younger ones wouldn't have that far to run. I remember the slight cool breeze on an otherwise very hot day. That talking circles and the hard decisions we made. Most of all I remember running alongside the Original people, who were showing me how it get's done.
