With more influences than you can throw a kitchen sink at, s.p.o.n.g.e characterizes all that is special about the burgeoning music scene in Singapore - the ability to amalgamate and mix the love for all kinds of music. Drawing influences from Metal, Alternative Rock, Pop, Shoegaze, Folk and churning them into a carefully crafted album, “Frankel Avenue”, with 10 busting anthems, will help you fall in love with music once again.
s.p.o.n.g.e is Mohamed Rahmat (Vocalist), A. Qader (Drums), Muhammad Syairazi (Bass), Syafiq Supingi(Guitars/Vocals) and Kenneth Tan (Guitars). The band met while trudging through the drone of university life. Aspiring to move the foundations of music with a unified belief that challenging music can be crafted with a pop edge, s.p.o.n.g.e set out writing songs drawing from the experience of the everyday, but lined with considered musicianship to interest the devout music fan.
“We want people to understand the feeling we had when we first listened to our musical heroes,” says Rahmat, “As a collective, we’re so much more than our individual parts and you can definitely hear each of our unique musical influences through the songs in ‘Frankel Avenue’.”
Recorded at the Void, under the masterful hands of established producer Nick Chan, who has produced albums for I am David Sparkle, Bismuth and Amateur Takes Control, and mixed and mastered by Kamal and Laz Harris at Sound Advice Recording Studios, “Frankel Avenue” looks set to be the next local album to set the local scene alight.
The first single, “News”, begins with crunching guitars, exploding into a flurry of soundscapes, slowly easing its listeners into a melodic verse and ends with the final climatic choral chorus, its tune never once letting you go.
Songs like “For Fathers” and “Come Home” relight the embers of tired feelings long stowed away, and “Silver Stains” and “P.S. Gone” with blaring guitars and Shoegaze-type eruptions, are ticking time bombs, ready to blow minds away with an impossible eruption of song.
Already gathering effusive praise from plaudits such as youth forum, Youth.SG, and local pop magazine, Manja, which have touted the band as “The Top 10 Singapore Bands to Look Out for in 2008”, s.p.o.ng.e, with their debut album, “Frankel Avenue” in tow, looks set now more than ever, to cement themselves into the ever-changing musical landscape.
