I’m a 28 year old Hmong American. My family emmigrated to the US from Thailand in 1983 after the Vietnam war. We were sponsored by a Christian family in La Crosse Wisconsin. We moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in 1997 when my father became ill; he subsequently passed away later that year.
I come from a very traditional family of 4 sisters (2 older, 2 younger) and 3 brothers (all younger).
My comedy started as an ambition to perform one show at the ACME Comedy Club in Minneapolis. So, I rounded up a group of family and friends to my basement and it started out what is known as "Family Night" which occurs about every 3 months. It’s an informal forum for people to rap, read poetry, sing or perform whatever. We are the only family that I know of that has "Family Night".
I’m trying to follow in the footstep of Tou Ger Xiong. He is the original Hmong Comedian. However, his material and mine differ GREATLY. He deals a lot with social issues, it’s educational and is of course -- CLEAN! My material is not clean (see headline). I recently found out that people are taping my performances and putting it online. Also, I found another Hmong Comedian in California. Hopefully, I can find other Hmong Comedians and start a tour one day. Wouldn’t that be something!

My material deals with growing up poor, Asian American, the differences between the races, differences between the sexes, and I can get graphic and very sexual at times. Any other oddities that I can find in my adventures through life.

I have a 1-hour demo DVD of my performance from Family Night taken on 03/25/06. It’s really raw and sloppy but it was a collection of my favorite material from a full year of performances!

Tou Ger Xiong: he was the first Hmong comedian. He opened the door for everyone else.

Yeng Moua: she is the founder of Hmong Teen Magazine and Hmong is You Magazine. She is really great about promoting the great Hmong talent. She is an inspiration to us all.
We need not hunt after fame or honor. If we are worthy of honor, it will come to us unsought. The bee will be attracted to the flower, laden with honey. The flower does not invite the bee. -- From "Gems of Buddhist Wisdom."

Hmong Culture and History
You have a fresh, personal story which needs to be shared with the youth, both Hmong and non-Hmong. Many youth as they grow up leave their roots for a time, but return to them when they have been strongly planted, as your's have been. Your love for the people of your heritage and your story of questioning and returning to the values with which you have been raised both encourage and sustain others as they make that journey. Thank you for sharing your life with our program, many hundreds of young people who will also at times wander away but be drawn back by the heart strings of those who love them. Bless you for your focus on today's youth!
--Sally Baas Hmong Cultural Director at Concordia College in St. Paul
I love your hmong jokes, haha, especially the one about the hmong song, lol, where you were saying that "how come hmong songs always have a pause in the song where the guy talks", that was laugh out loud funny. Also, I like the fact that you are not discrete, you talk about everything, from dates to sex to whatever. Can't wait to hear some of your new stuff though, I'm sure it'll be a hit! Keep doing what you're doing. You may not think so, but you do make a difference in peoples lives. Laughter is a very important part of life, sometimes we forget to do that more often then not, so again, thx for making me laugh.
