Irreconcilable Differences:
The EBM/Goth Split
Years ago you could go to a goth club
and you could hear a variety of music -
a mixture of old school stuff, doomy gothic rock,
swirly ethereal, industrial the likes of Skinny
Puppy, and perhaps some 80's tinged new wave.
There were no separate classifications in the
patrons - none of this "Goth" vs "Rivethead" thing.
We were all just freaks. But nothing stays the same
forever does it? Slowly but surely there seemed
to be an influx of electronic- based music that
came in under the guise of industrial.
Apoptygma Berzerk and VNV Nation stick out in my
mind and I kind of had a thing for the hard to
find-in-the-U.S. Wolfsheim back then. Driven by
mellow melodies and heavy handed, pulsing,
repetitive dance beats; they were good floor
fillers and people found it easy to dance to.
These bands grew in popularity - especially
among the youngsters with endless stompy energy
to expend, and as they did, a whole swarm of
sound alike bands cropped up and with the aid of
ever increasing technology, it seemed nearly
anyone could be a one man or two man "band"
with pre-programmed bleeps and whistles. There
was a clear cut and paste formula-type thing
going on here that unfortunately saw a lot of
erosion in the sense of true musicianship.
Suddenly it was generally accepted that the
majority of these new bands didn't even play
any of their music live - but performed on stage
to pre-recorded tracks much like today's pop
bands do.
Over the next few years these bands grew and
changed even more losing their harder edges
and started to lean more and more toward
house/trance/techno music - lighter, fluffy,
meant for fun (kind of like a modern version
of Disco if you ask me). DJs similarly became
more technical, more conscious of beat mixing
and what BPMs went over well with certain crowds
- similar to the technical proficiency you'll
find in house/trance DJs. It's been a virtual
take over in some cases - some clubs going so
far as to take the word "goth" out of their tag
lines and descriptions completely. EBM and
synthpop - and what some are now calling Future
Pop has come into its own - with it's own crowd
and DJs seemingly quite separate from the
darker tones of the goth scene. There are a
few clubs that manage to mix it up a bit, but
more and more I've seen a complete separation
developing. This was not a conscious or
deliberate separation in the beginning as much
as it was just two sub-cultures becoming too
different to co-exist in one atmosphere anymore.
Some one made the comment to me once that
"Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' is more goth than VNV
Nation these days." This of course left an ever
developing void in the goth scene for those
people who still yearned for darker, spookier
things. To some, this new trend towards techno
was tip-toeing too closely to the mainstream for
comfort. New bands like Cinema Strange and
Antiworld would never be played in these clubs
- they'd never have a chance. More and more it
seemed these crowds looked upon DJs as human
jukeboxes - demanding that this or that be
played instead of allowing the DJs to use their
skill and instinct to bring them new and varied
material. I have known DJs who say their true
love IS deathrock or gothrock and yet they are
"forced" to play EBM because it's what their
crowd demands. This one-sidedness on the club
patrons part continued to alienate those people
who missed the variety. People who were
unsatisfied with the new club formats many times
just quit going out. But growth and change
eventually promotes rebellion and reaction.
As EBM went off to bigger and better things
expanding its market; the restless dark souls
of the underground would not see their subculture
go silently into the light. | | Music | I am not even going to list the bands.
In general I like melodic gothic music
most but I listen to all types of music
and I like almost anything that I feel
has passion and talent in it.
That being said ~ I love the 80's
I love Big Hair bands, old country
Southren Rock, 70's rock, and
old gansta rap.
| | Movies | I really like Cocteau films and Bergman too.
I favor older films mostly - I do not like most
sci-fi but fantasy is sometimes ok. Indy,
low budget B films are fantabulous.
I guess it really comes to if the movie
has sole - thats what really matters -

About me:

I am the most amazing person you may ever meet! If you are one of the few to attain my attention for more than a moment and truely get to know me you will understand what I mean.
I am a mother of a 17 yr old and a 4 year old ~ both girls. They are my saving graces in this so called life. My pride and joys and I am most proud of all the hurdles we have crossed togehter.
Currently I am studing my Masters in Criminal Justice. I am a Theatre major and History minor and design clothes, and I do make up both in film and theatre. I love traveling, and meeting people from all over the world. If you are ever visiting AZ please send me an email! I have been fortunate to meet a few of my friends and I have plans on traveling too, very soon!
This next area is truely about me. I did not write this to impress you, or make myself seem something I am not. This is me: my desires, my needs, my likes and dislikes. It is honest and true. Read it and you will know me.
I am a very loyal friend, and a very passive aggressive enemy. Simply stated, dont get on my bad side.
I seem to have the misfortune of seeing the best in people, and yes this is a misfourtune. I see the most ultimate person that they can be and then I am thrust back to reality when people are, well people.
I am also painfully honest...really. Dont ask questions you dont want the answer to...I will tell you the truth and not the candy coated version of it...most of you cant handle this, saddly I had to experience this to understand what a curse this is.
I am rather sassy and sarcastic, but you'd love me inspite of my flaws because I am that awesome!
I am a dreamer, and somewhat an incurable romantic, but I am not sure I believe in happily ever after.
I am in love with being in love. I need enormous amounts of attention and passion. I can tolerate alot but I require complete trust as I give complete trust instantly.
Im an extreamist in love too ~ its all or nothing. Love me completely or hate me intollerablly but dont leave me wondering to long, or I will make that choice myself.
I can handle just about anything except liars and emotionally distance, infact the quickest way to lose me is to leave me alone emotionally.
I love to laugh, I love my friends and would do anything for them.
I love to see plays versus movies, but never make it too enough. I love opera and ballet and I enjoy muesums of all sorts.
I am a big humanitarian and I am not anywhere near the right wing, although I am not a crazy liberal. I give my last dollar away often...one never knows when that may be *you* standing there needing help.
I dont believe in in organized religion only because I have yet to meet someone that participates in the above mentioned and isnt convinced that they are the only right ones! And yes, you are an organized religion if you meet regularly...do not fool yourselves...
I love the ocean and I miss living near it more than I can ever explain. I grew up in Florida and spent 13 years divided between the Gulf and the Atlantic. I had a tan, I surfed, I had natural highlights in my hair. I remember skipping school on hurricane warning days and heading out the the beach with my friends. I last walk at the ocean almsot a year ago and when I walked into the water, I cried. I have almost decided that next summer (2010) I will be moving back to her...she is calling me stronger than ever and I find the siren call irresistble. I am coming home...finally. *crosses fingers*
I am considered by most to be gothic (whatever that means) ~ I personally don't believe in labels but accept them as general descriptions. That said, yes, I wear alot of black, and yes I am pale. I love red lipstick (MAC) and I enjoy melodic music. And I also love Journey! Yes that what I said, so take me or leave me, I am what I am.
