"Spun Rivals (EP) is a nifty display of hooks, jaggered riffing and displays a promising future for this style of song writing. It's not punk, nor rock, nor pop—but a little of each. Post-punk indie new-wave is what the press release says, and as broad as that sounds, it feels kind of appropriate." Single Review, Melbourne Arts .Net
"World class electro punk" Single Review, Beat
"a raucous take on Brit-Pop, laced with an ethos of experimentation and electronic malfunction." Single Review, Beat
"Spun Rivals left their audience speechless at the sheer energy and brilliance that possesses the band. From the lyrics to the songs themselves, each one is crafted meticulously into an epic experience"
Faster Louder Live Review
"Spun Rivals. Blew.Me.Away! The trio were power-charged, ripping through 45 minutes with the level of energy never faltering. The Scott and two Aussies stage-graced with loud, wirery guitar reminiscent of At The Drive In at moments, while channelling the pop sensibilities and biting lyrics of The Clash" Live Review, Alexandra for nickjamvendetta
"(Spun Rivals) delivered powerful indie-rock made up of killer hooks, interesting storytelling, and talented performing"
Faster Louder Live Review
"an army of noises when seen live look like a series of
science experiments."
Faster Louder Live Review
"distinctive live performance presence that is reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand."
Faster Louder Live Review
"energetic, Brit-rock influenced, half-danceable/half-moshable sounds" Live Review, not that you asked for my opinion
"This is one band you will hear more about in days to come." Live Review, Faster Louder
“(Short Player of the Month) the best of the bunch is… (Spun Rivals EP)... an absolute stunner. Single Review, Steve Scully, Wireless Bollinger

THE RUBYS FIRST BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA - 4 MORE SLEEPS
One year ago, on a lonely Wednesday evening at a forgettable Collingwood pub, The Rubys played their first gig. Twelve months on, the three scrappy-looking lads have under their belts better songs, more gigs and are infecting Melbourne audiences with catchy, raw, stomp rock n roll pretty much weekly. So to mark the milestone of reaching the ripe old age of one, The Rubys are celebrating with a birthday party! With around 40 gigs down over the previous year and a wildly raucous live set, there has been a lot of jumping around and beer consumed so this Friday at the Old Bar will be no exception. Expect some wild blues-driven sets by The Volatiles and The Bellows to warm things up, and the boy’s favourite two-piece The Cheats bringing it all home. 8:30 start, $8, Party hats provided.
Hope to see you down there and we can all rock out!!

Brisbane outfit Toy Balloon will release their debut album Toy Division on
November 8 through Lofly Records, and to celebrate will perform an east coast
launch tour throughout November.
Formed in 2007, Toy Balloon was
originally a fledgling two-piece made up by Nimai Etheridge’s uniquely melodic
wall-of-sound guitar and Greg Cooper’s beautiful sequenced electronic
compositions. The band have since matured into a four piece featuring Chloe
Cooper (Mr Maps) on key boards and Ben Green on drums.
The album was
recorded and mixed at the Lofly Hangar in Brisbane, a DIY performance space that
Toy Balloon has been an integral part of creating. Fostering emerging artists
and left-of-centre music, the Hangar acts as a performance space, recording
studio, and meeting place; and has resulted in a record with a rich, layered
sound reminiscent of New Order, Mogwai, Boards of Canada, and LCD
Soundsystem.
