In a musical world dominated by American idol and pre-packaged musical acts; Spy for Hire emerges as a reality check to the industry. Remember back before music was safe and prepackaged? Shouldn't music have a sense of revolution? Will the voice of the new generations truly be defined by middle aged men and corporations? Spy For Hire's debut EP "Speak in Numbers" acts as anthem against the status quo and a triumphant return to roots of the early days of Rock N' Roll.
The Band
As it happens in most great cliché pulp novels, heroes emerge from nowhere to bring forth much needed change. Musically, this is that type of pulp novel. Hailing from the small industrial town of Columbus, Georgia – band, Spy for Hire creates music derived from passion and instinct, rather than business trends or historical hype. Formed in 2004, with borrowed instruments by lead singer Ryan Rulon and guitarist Andy Rich; Spy for Hire began its soul mission to create music. Soon with the addition of Jared Meharg on drums and Ty Izumi on bass to round up the bands line up - Spy for Hire began playing throughout the southeast. Musicians and their music should always defy time and place, yet be connected to their specific time and place; Spy for Hire successfully achieves this contradiction, by following their own musical truths.
The Music
"…these guys [SPY FOR HIRE] are the real thing!" stated an ecstatic music fan at the band's recent performance in Athens, GA. Spy for Hire are true throw back to alternative music, when it actually meant a musical alternative to mainstream; its art form is in the sincerity of its truths both lyrically and melodically.
"I hear the songs in melodies and then the appropriate words find their home into the song." explains Rulon when questioned about song writing and inspirations. Like many art forms, the source of its creations are mysterious and powerful, which the band delivers to the listeners like shamans channeling from the collective power of their generation.
Speak in Numbers
Spy for Hire's first extended EP "Speak in Numbers" emerges as a passionate musical landscape which effectually speaks to the discontented wanting of today. The opening song, "Luck" masks its pop undertones with raw desire. Track three, "Things Used to Be Good" with its bitter-sweet musings in the chorus " Don't believe, in things you used to be proud of…" further sets the tone of a world that unfortunately must and should be questioned and the discontentment's of a world gone wrong. On track five, "Motorcycle" the power elevates into a tribal-like chant in the songs hypnotic choruses. Speak in Numbers, is skillfully and meticulously produced by James Salter for boutique label Architek One. Spy for Hire, with "Speak in Numbers", has created an infectious opus to the power of rock and needed return to music that matters.
Atlanta clubs every time have given envelopes with money in them marked as "Fur." So, there is your abbreviation you requested. Y'all coming to the Brotus Patch (Soho) this Friday?
