PROBE DMS
I remember when my father first played Rick James Ghetto Life for me. I was just five years old and I fell in love with music right then and there. By six I was itching to DJ and sneaking on my fathers turntables when he wasnt home. Fortunately, my mother became my partner in crime and let me explore my interest and craft my talent ;-) heh heh. When I was 15 I created my first loop, a two-second sample from Love is the Message, with my Casio SK1. I was so excited, I ran to my friends Dereks house, with my keyboard in hand and the loop still playing. He was just as excited as I was and bought a 12-second sampler the next day. I knew it was on this was 1991.
Since then, I have pretty much devoted my life to making music anyone who knows me will tell you that. I started out DJing hip-hop and R&B music but I eventually focused on producing and emceeing. Now I am a producer, emcee, engineer, re-mixer, DJ, and executive producer. When I met Solo in 2001 my musicianship expanded even more. We were approached by record producer Adam Kidron to create theme music for his companys website, but once we started the project, Solo and I decided to record an album. We named the album and the first track The Start of Something Big because thats what we wanted it to be.
By the time we finished the fourth track we felt like we were creating a movement. We called it SpyMusic. SpyMusic is an amalgamation of ghetto life, golf courses, and artistic freedom. We make music that comes directly from emotion and feeling. The process is simple; connect with the bad day youve had or the wonderful sunrise peeking through the window and turn it into notes, pads, and lush harmonies. The songs on this album are all colors of life that express how we feel and what we want to tell the world about our inner thoughts.
Everyone has a story to tell, listen to ours.
JON SOLO
I was playing Mozart Sonatas before learning nursery rhymes. Music has been in my life ever since I was able to form a semi-intelligent sentence. Im from a small farming community in the northwestern part of America. Back then people called me the piano man. I traveled throughout the world while I was young competing in numerous competitions, not knowing what my life would become. I think I wanted to be an Air Force pilot, but after a few years I decided I didnt like flying and made music my destiny, which made sense seeing how I had already invested 15 years.
After studying jazz piano at Cornish College of the Arts, I moved to NYC where I began collaborating with Probe dms. His father was a DJ who played dance music from the 70s and 80s, so we couldnt have had a more opposite upbringing in regard to music. I always loved all styles of music and so has Probe so we have a mutual respect for each others tastes. Together we truly fuse jazz, classical, hip-hop, R&B, and dance music.
Initially SpyMusic was born to create theme music for a music distribution companys website. The concept was growing so big that we decided to record an album, even though we had no idea of what kind of music we were actually going to make. Probe had an idea and I just went with it. Every string layer, organ pad, and synth solo came with ease from our hearts. Nothing we wrote was forced because we werent trying to please anyone but ourselves.
We hope you enjoy listening to our album. We had fun making it.
