Hyperkinetic emo-fi crackling with corrupted innocence, jangle-free, stripped-down pain on parade in the back of a pretty blue police car. squadcar are the bastard sons of Lou Barlowe and Utada Hikaru. They're the rookie cop gone bad. They're white bread pop drenched in red wine punk, lost, alone, wandering Tokyo and making beautiful music. And the fourth album 'squadcar' is music for everything missed - for the sneer that turns to a smile as the train pulls away, for the growl that turns to a bubble gum pop song when your inbox is empty again. They'll pull out your heart, break it in pieces and hand it back with a smile and a yoroshiku onegaishimasu. They're bilingual, beautiful, brilliant and bewildered. And back
The diminutive ball of energy, Dan (rhythm, vocals), hooked up with the mellowest of gentle giants (until he plays, that is) Andy (drums) way back in spring 2001 when the two of them played Radio:on as a Stripes-ey guitar/drums duo. The lanky melancholic Glenn joined in 2002 (lead, vocals) to add the melodies that have made them famous. In 2003, squadcar handpicked Masa (bass), the prettiest and best-dressed J bassplayer in the business, and squadcar started to click like a geiger counter.
And they nearly imploded. The now-legendary sessions for Misses, with the hugely
influential (and highly volatile) Chris McGuire, ex-drummer for famous J band
Quruli, as producer, have entered rock lore as how not to make an album. The shouting matches, all-night sessions, drinking, crack-ups, breakups and breakdowns, the spontaneous narcolepsy - and throughout, the best music of their lives.
And now 'squadcar', the soon to be released fourth album, is the great music that comes from the messy, painful business of living your life. This is squadcar at the edge of the envelope - punked up, pissed off and too often brokenhearted.
