Band MembersLike most jazz musicians I play all kinds of different stuff, and playing different stuff is what keeps music alive for me.

On the music player you can hear 2 tracks from my album 'Gaya' which I wrote for 9 piece band. This features some of the best up and coming jazz musicians on ther London scene, including Gareth Lockrane on flute, Sam Mayne on alto, Tony Woods on alto, Ian East on tenor, Patrick Naylor on guitar, Milo Fell on drums, Dave Priseman on trumpet, Barnaby Dickinson on the bone, Rob Millett on percussion. I play bass guitar with this project.

Another track 'Squiggly Music' is from my solo album which is much more electronic and studio based. I play all the instruments on this.

The final tune is from a forthcoming release by a band called Brasil Universo, which we have got together to play Brasilian jazz music, especially music from the great Hermeto Pascoal. It features Ian East, Patrick Naylor, Milo Fell, Alex Keen and myself on piano, which is my main instrument these days.

Some video solo renditions of jazz standards can be found here

I have recently become completely obsessed with the music of Bach, and I am at the moment trying to learn the preludes and fugues, which is not easy for a jazz musician. You can see how I am progressing here
There is more different stuff coming soon.

InfluencesToo many to list, but of a few of my main influences at the moment are ... Hermeto Pascoal, Joe Zawinul, Bach, Bobo Stenson, John Taylor, Glen Gould, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Messiaen, Ligeti, Jaco Pastorius, Django Bates, Egberto Gismonti and of course Keith Jarrett. I love these guys.

If you like the tracks here then please feel you can buy one of my cds, I have about 8 recent ones for sale. You can buy these from

   About David Beebee

Hi, I am David Beebee, piano and synth player, electric bass dabbler and composer of melodies, harmonies and rhythms.
Biogs are boring so I shall keep it brief...
I did my first orchestral arrangement at 8, I recorded my first album at 13, played at the albert hall at 15 and hammersmith odeon at 18. Since then I have been playing and writing as much music as possible, in all kinds of different directions, but with a definite jazz bias.
Stylistically I was brought up on a diet of classical music but then discovered punk and rock in my teenage years. From Hendrix to late Coltrane was just a small step, they both share a certain intensity that I aspire to, and now I take my inspiration from all kinds of world music, jazz and classical.
I live in semi reclusive retirement on the south coast of Britain, where I practise Bach and grow vegetables, and when I can I go to the Himalaya and other remote places to trek in the mountains.

I always try to have several projects on the go...
Gaya ... is an exciting new nine piece band who play a rich variety of jazz, groove and world music written by David Beebee. Gaya is made up of some of the finest up and coming jazz musicians on the London scene.

Brasil Universo...a new group we have got together to play music from the Brasilian greats, Hermeto, Egberto, Jobim. New album is just out.

And I play with Patrick Naylor's Soundial, Julian Costello Quartet, and sometimes with Theo Travis and occasionally with Reem Kelani. Generally with anyone who asks...

This is what the critics say about Gaya... "packed with interesting writing, tight ensemble playing, exciting solos and danceable rhythms" - Musician magazine 2002
"David Beebee is brilliant... his scores are world-class" - Jazzwise magazine 2002
"Now prepare to be totally floored by the dynamic music of UK bassist David Beebee. His captivating 'big band sound' takes his music to the outer limits". - Ronnie Scott magazine
"This large small group can play at gale force seven" - BBC music magazine
The new album recently released on Beeboss Records has received rave reviews.
"A blazing CD you'll play again and again" - Jazzwise mag 2002
"A gem of an album" - BBC music
"Here's an album with something for everyone" - BBC music magazine 2002
"It's always exciting to come across a major new talent" - jazzwise

I also play standards with a trio, duos with my saxophone playing friend, and sometimes solo piano, as well as playing in many other bands of different styles. Music suitable for every occasion?? Give us a gig!!

David, thanks very much for the add. The last time I saw you was when you were playing with Pat Naylor at the Barbican - about 10 years ago! I remember it clearly, not only because I was enthralled with your bass playing and Pat's guitar mastery, but also because I got lucky that night!! Well, there you have it, the good old days!

all the best,

Jim

Hello mate, nice to see you on here; how's everything going, good I hope. Nice to see you've got some of the Gaya tracks up on here; it's a shame we never did anymore gigs after the one in Croydon.

Hope to see you at some point.

Take care,

Dave.
