Death-disco, brutal-chansons and morbid rock. Weltschmerz and Existentialism combined with frenetic noise – this could be a way to describe Squishy Squid from Vienna. Still, it might be something completely different. Squishy Squid, formed ages ago, have been working in their current formation since 2006.
One mild November evening at a time when Squishy Squid were looking for a singer, Delirium, the band’s bass player, met Nancy at a café. Nancy was interested and came to the next rehearsal. And sang her heart out. Since then, they worked together, struggling on their way to world and otherworldly fame.
They share next to nothing when it comes to musical taste.
Indeed, Delirium enjoys Baroque music and Post-Punk, Georg’s heart beats for Heavy Metal, Gregor, the drummer, is an avid listener to both “Die Ärzte” and “Grease”, while Sebastian, who plays the synth, is an aficionado of Avantgarde and Electronica. Vocalist Nancy, Darling describes her taste in music as “anything honest. And I don’t like happy music.”
Beyond this, she indulges in musical eclecticism and relates to her favourite music and reading in her lyrics. “Velvet morning” bears its name in honour of a Lydia Lunch-song. “Bonjour Tristesse” is named for the novel by Françoise Sagan, the lyrics contain an allusion to Juliette Greco, the “black sun of France”. “I wanted to write a song about frustration”, says Darling. “Later on, when the song was released, I incidentally heard “Erschießen” by Ideal. “Bonjour Tristesse” is my “Erschießen” – or maybe my “Heroin” (Velvet Underground).”
“Bonjour Tristesse“ is also the group’s debut album’s name. It blends their colourful tastes into an energetic and powerful whole and a musical mix that has been enjoyed live by fans of music from Pop to Post-punk, from Lisbon to Leipzig. In Vienna, they were the Chicks on Speed’s opening act and played the Donauinselfest. Recently, they managed to convince the jury of the FM4 Protestsongcontest 2009. In their performance, they forewent most of their equipment, and instead relied on cooking pots, megaphones and a vacuum cleaner to rebel “against the boredom of a secure existence” (lyrics: Nancy, Darling). The debut album shares the same topic: vocalist Nancy switches between German and English, sings of love, anorexia, drowned dead and the moon. Two grooving basses, a swirling keyboard and tough drums create such stuff as dreams are made on. No guitars. Honestly. Squishy Squid will take over the world:
„I am certain that rock’n’roll will save us all“, says Nancy, Darling.
A band on a mission.
