There’s no better evidence of Brazilian popular music’s remarkable capacity to renew itself than the versatile work of singer and composer Sérgio Santos. After beginning his musical career as a singer in Milton Nascimento’s Missa dos Quilombos in 1982, he took off on his own, working closely with his writing partner, poet Paulo Cesar Pinjheiro. Their extraordinarily creative relationship has produced more than 200 superb songs, performed by, among others, Leila Pinheiro, Joyce, Fátima Guedes, Francis Hime, Lenine, Dori Caymmi, Olívia Hime and Milton Nascimento. In 1996, Sérgio Santos was nominated for the Sharp Premium, Brazil’s most exemplary music award, for his first CD, "Aboio"(95). In 1999 his critically praised “Mulato” was released and he performed at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, one of the sacred temples of American music. Los Angeles Times critic Don Heckman, reviewing the performance, wrote “Santos underscored everything he did with an irresistible feeling for the highly compatible linkages between Brazilian music and American jazz." In 2002, after he signed with Biscoito Fino, Santos’ CD, "Áfrico," a masterpiece of contemporary Brazilian music received the Best CD – 2002, Rival BR Award. In 2004, displaying his diverse musical interests, he released the samba-focused "Sérgio Santos", followed by 2007’s "Iô Sô", an album simmering with the irresistible rhythms of the congado, a popular music from Minas Gerais.
