The Spencer Nielsen Band is a three piece band developed from the song writing of keyboard player and solo artist Spencer Nielsen. Spencer, originally a solo piano artist, began singing and writing in 2003, soon after finding a regular gig at Salt Lake piano bar, Cabana Club. After years of performing for the weekly “college night” crowd and after producing two successful albums “Simple Vibe” 2005 and “Taking Control” 2007 with producer/engineer Matt Winegar in Salt Lake City, Spencer was looking for something more and was struggling to keep any momentum with his musical career. As Spencer puts it, “ I needed someone to feed off...to keep me going up there.” So together with percussionist Dan Pectol the band began to form in late 2007 performing at various small clubs, including Liquid Joes, Tony’s, and Huka Bar. . Dan had been doing open mic nights and working with various musicians and in the area including, Kevin Burdick, Eliza Wren, Wensday, and Steve Sullivan. Known for his open mic drumming abilities, Dan fit well with Spencers’ free flowing style. In January 2008, they teamed up with experienced guitar man Vito Perry, who had played in many local and touring bands over the years, including; Smackwater, Soul Maloney, Sturgeon General, Salty Rootz, The Screaming Beavers, The Vitals, Dragline and others. Vito, who was eager to try the bass out and coincidently, “looking for a gig.” was welcomed with open arms into the band, bringing instant experience and credibility to the band. At about the same time in February 2008, Spencer was voted as Salt Lake Citys’ top Singer/Songwriter in its 2008 City Weekly Slammy Awards Issue and the SNBand had officially arrived .
Things have only picked up for the band since. In June 2008 The SNBand was invited to play the annual 97.5 The Blaze Viva Salt Lake Concert in the Viva Lounge. With national stars such as POD, Candlebox, and Royal Bliss on the bill, this was a great experience , as thousands of music fans were introduced to the bands’ music. In August 2008, 2 months later the The SNBand appeared main stage at Salt Lake’s Downtown Gallivan Center, performing for an estimated crowd of 5000 in August as a part of 97.5 The Blaze Wednesday Rocks Concert Series. With various other performances and venues under their belt throughout the last year Spencer is optimistic about the bands future stating, “... were just beginning to enjoy performing on stage as a group...always getting better.” With plans to release a new album in Summer 2009, song writing has been the focus of Spencer and the band lately. With new songs such as “Tonight” and “Hands Up” forthcoming, the bands future looks bright.
