Born in Bindura, Zimbabwe and raised in Minnesota, Sophia Shorai grew up in a very musical family. With a mother who sings and a father who plays the trumpet, Sophia was continuously surrounded by many styles of music.
She has always been determined to be a full-time professional musician and has effectively accomplished that over the past seven years. She has performed lead roles in several musical theater productions, recorded a number of national television commercials and records live and in-studio regularly. Having recorded three full-length records - Jazz Standards, Bossa Nova's, and an original project called Desiradi - Sophia is well on her way to producing a library of varying musical genres.
Along with studio work, Sophia maintains a steady schedule of performing in jazz and rock venues throughout the Twin Cities. She's held regular gigs at some of the most recognized clubs regionally and nationally at The Dakota and First Avenue, to name a few.
Sophia enjoys and values all styles of high-quality music including anything from Otis Redding to Blondie or Lady Day to U2. Her most celebrated vocalists are Anita O'Day, Ella, Ray, Joni, Stevie and Aretha.
Sophia has also studied piano since the age of five along with voice instruction. She continued private study until junior year of high school when she attended the Perpich Center For Arts Education. Following graduation she began teaching both piano and voice and continues to do so today.
