For decades, crayons have been the building blocks of creativity for millions of children and adults alike. Crayons are the ABCs and 123s of creative origins. My artwork consists of using these and other common materials in an unconventional way.
At present, my art embodies an extensive study in the marriage of hot glue and crayons on canvas entitled Stained Plastic Art. Stained Plastic, like stained glass, captures light but by shining on and around rather than through the works of art. The dimensions created by the heat of the glue and the layers of color are responsible for this play of light and shadow. Due to the thickness and transparency of the glue, the works retain qualities of depth and liquidity even after drying. The swirling strokes and flow of color give the Stained Plastic a living, moving appearance that could not be achieved using other mediums.
Dedication and commitment have allowed me to master numerous techniques in working with Stained Plastic Art. Pioneering through uncharted territory I engineered methods to regulate the intensity of colors, manipulate the form in each work, and developed a curing process to smooth the final product. I will engage a half dozen or more smoldering hot glue guns while creating one piece of art work. I move from one gun to the next, pulsing out the liquid while monitoring the flow and saturation of the canvas. Hundreds of crayons and glue sticks have been melted down in the birthing of Stained Plastic Art.
Many of my works use bold colors and patterns. These forms appear solid and simple from a distance but upon close inspection they are riddled with the twists curves and turns that surround our lives. Gazing at Stained Plastic one can peer into the vibrant depths and see colors within colors frozen in time.
