   About Stanchester Quire
Stanchester Quire

The choir was formed around 11 years ago by Eddie Upton of 'Folk South West' who had a brainwave of getting a group of local people from all walks of life to learn to sing folk songs and traditional carols in 4 part harmony. As you can hear, the results have been pretty amazing and the choir has gone from strength to strength.

In our concerts we don't just sing as a choir. We also do solos,duets and trios for example and little sketches and stories as well.

Stanchester Quire is a community choir based in South Somerset, England. The songs we sing are English folk songs from the South West and elsewhere and West Gallery church music at Christmas time . We consist of people of all ages and both sexes and come from diverse backgrounds. We sing generally unaccompanied by instruments and the sound we produce is often quite magical.

We meet to practice in Montacute at All Saints Primary School on Tuesday nights in term time. We give concerts around the region every year in summer and Christmas time. New members will be made very welcome. You can find out more from our website at www.stanchesterquire.co.uk

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(see my blog for details):
CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

(Hi: enjoyed my visit.)

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Folk South West are pleased to announce this years Residential Easter School at Chanrmarle, Dorset from 16th-19th April 2009.
The Easter School is renowned for the quality of its Traditional Song programme. You will have the chance to work on technique, style, interpretation and repertoire in small groups. Some of your sessions will be run as mini “master classes”. The focus will be on traditional English song and we will give you the chance to have an hour of one to one tuition with one of the tutors. The 2009 Traditional Song tutors are Chris Coe, Sandra Kerr, Eddie Upton and Tim van Eyken. Shirley Collins will be spending two days with us as a visiting tutor on the Friday and Saturday.
