Speak Out Concert (April 12 Dobson High School)'s Blurbs
About me: We are teenagers and young adults striving to make a lightning of a difference in a world full of darkness and dread.
Last year, Dobson High students were motivated to Stand for Darfur raising over seven thousand dollars for Darfur refugees. This year, ASU and Dobson High students are collaborating together to make a benefit concert for Darfur, Burma, The Congo, and Uganda. We are Speaking Out against the awful atrocities in the world and putting our foot down. Bands all over the valley are going to play at the Dobson High School Stadium on April 12, 2008. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
What better way to bring teenagers and young adults together to make a difference than music? Here is our mission: To make an impact through our words and songs. We want to raise awareness of the horrible crimes committed against human beings just like ourselves around the world and to raise money for those who have been affected by such harsh conditions and atrocities. We all have the right to live and breathe, and for some people around the world this right is taken away. We must put aside our selfish tendencies and SPEAK OUT!
April 12, 2008 we will come together to SPEAK OUT! WILL YOU??
THE CAUSES:
DARFUR, SUDAN
In the western region of Sudan, Darfur, over 400,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million people have been displaced in an ethnic cleansing attempt by the Sudanese government and their hired militias known as the Janjaweed (translated as “devils on horseback). This has been going on for over four years.
MYANMAR(BURMA)
The Burmese military government, which has ruled the country since 1962, has committed widespread atrocities against ethnic minorities during counter-insurgency campaigns. Over 600,000 people have been displaced and 3,000 villages destroyed. Burma also abuses citizens from the ethnic majority, pressing them into forced labor and recruiting tens of thousands of child soldiers.
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO (DRC)
The continued presence of rebel groups in the eastern part of the DRC has led to continued attacks against civilians, perpetrated both by the rebels and by the government forces attempting to regain the area. Sexual violence is often used as a weapon of war; tens of thousands of women and girls have been raped or mutilated, often in coordination with the destruction of their villages. In the last five years, approximately 4 million have been killed, making the war in the DRC more deadly to civilians than any other since World War II.
UGANDA
This country has been claimed as one of “the worst humanitarian crises in the world.” In Uganda for over 21 years, combination attacks by the Lord Resistance Army and aggressive displacement campaigns from the government have displaced over 1.9 million people and killed more than 400,000 people. Human rights have been denied with capturing children and mutilating and raping civilians. Peace has yet to be installed.

:) Aww no problem Christina it's what I'm here for!! I was so thrilled when she told me she'd just give me the check!! So I believe the order takes 1-2 weeks at the most. No more than 3 weeks they said. So I ordered them a couple of days ago meaning that we should have good timing :)
OH also, I put this STAND-In event on the SaveDarfur.org website so that if anyone searches for a Darfur event within our area, our event will come up and I put all the information and stuff on there for them to know where it's at, the date, etc.
T-SHIRTS??? Cafepress.com/darfur_crisis has free customization for t-shirt designs for organizations/events. So that's one idea. But we need to come up with an idea/design soon!!!
And do we want to buy the banner from the SaveDarfur.org store?? It's on sale for $35 from an orignal $50. It says "a call to your conscience. savedarfur.org"
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!! So I got my preschool that I work at (Maxwell Preschool Academy) to donate $150 to use for anything that we need before the event. So I've placed an order of 60 wristbands ($90) and four 18''x24'' lawn signs that say "Not On Our Watch" ($16) - plus the shipping and handling (about $10). So we still have some money left over. Also, I was given two posters in support of Darfur and I got those laminated - They're with Mrs. Klett. I've also emailed about 14 different organizations in support of Darfur and against genocide for donations of posters, stickers, etc. or anything they can offer. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys on Friday and/or Tuesday!!!
