About me:

STANDING IN TWO CIRCLES is the first definitive and comprehensive compendium of the works of Boyd Rice, one of the most provocative and controversial underground figures of the post-punk era. A pioneering noise musician and countercultural maven, from the late 1970s to the present Rice has worked in an array of capacities, playing the roles of: musician, performer, artist, photographer, essayist, interviewer, editor, occult researcher, filmmaker, actor, orator, deejay, gallery curator and tiki bar designer, among others.
First coming to prominence as an avant-garde audio experimentalist (recording under the moniker NON), Rice was a seminal founder of the first wave of industrial music in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, through collaborations with Re/Search Publications, Rice further established his position in underground with recountings of his uproarious pranks and the promotion of “incredibly strange” cult films and “industrial” culture. Rice’s influence on subculture was further exerted through his vanguard exhibition of found photographs and readymade thrift store art, as well as his adamant endorsements of outsider music, tiki culture and bygone pop culture in general. Rice is also notorious for his public associations with nefarious figures both infamous and obscure, including friendships and ideological collusions with the likes of cult leader Charles Manson and Church Of Satan founder Anton LaVey, among others. His work continues to profoundly affect the countercultural underground at large, inspiring and enraging in equal measure.

STANDING IN TWO CIRCLES contains:

Essays 1986–2007:
Over 30 provocative essays, many previously unpublished, on subjects ranging from Mondo Films to Charles Manson, Savitri Devi to the Hellfire Club, Cocktail Culture to African Atrocities, and from Abraxas to Rape. Of the 33 essays contained herein, 11 appear here for the first time ever. Of the remaining 22 previously published texts contained in this volume, most are revised, updated and expanded from their original versions.

Lyrics:
The complete words to the Boyd Rice recording catalogue, including such CDs as: Music, Martinis & Misanthropy, In The Shadow Of The Sword, Hatesville!, God & Beast, Wolf Pact, and Alarm Agents. 17 years worth of Rice’s albums, EPs, singles, collaborations and compilation cuts, the vast majority of which have never before been published, and are printed here for the first time.

Art & Photography:
A collection of 40 original plates, including Experimental Photographs, Fetish Photographs, Documentary Photographs, Manipulated Halftones and Abstract Paintings, most never before published.

STANDING IN TWO CIRCLES also includes an extensive illustrated biography of Boyd Rice from the 1970s to the present, by the book’s editor, Brian M. Clark.

REVIEWS:

"A refreshingly diverse, eclectic and immensely compelling compilation - kids novelty bathtime soaps share pages with tales of predatory exercises and break-and-enters, Gomer Pyle singing 'Shazam' and Charles Manson imparting philosophy firsthand within the walls of prison. Lighthearted and not-so-lighthearted, Pop and Unpop. A treasure trove of entertaining and thought provoking writings, photographs and artworks. What more could one ask for?
This is complemented by a detailed, balanced and engaging introduction by the book's editor, Brian M. Clark. My recommendation: order a copy pronto, and then pour yourself a drink, put your feet up, turn the page and enter the wild and way-out world of Boyd Rice."
    - Martin McIntosh
Outré Gallery and Outré Gallery Press (AU)

“A comprehensive collection that includes photography, lyrics and essays from the prolific career of culture-vulture pain-in-the-ass Boyd Rice… Rice excels in his social commentary essays and stories… when he is spinning his common sense jabs at ridiculous things like politically-correct bumper stickers (‘Passive Activism’) or making a case that the U.S. war on terror is ‘a war between cultures that drink and those that don’t’ (‘Booze vs. Baghdad’), Boyd is a critic on his own terms and a damn good one… [Rice] is a right-place guy who knows which buttons to push and how to maneuver himself in, well, at least two circles. He’s made his mark and it’s about time we see something like this.”
    - Your Flesh (US)

"Depicts Rice as not only a key figure in experimental music but also someone who has broken the chokehold of political correctness and, in his flirtations with what the censors would regard as 'evil,' acknowledged the essential duality of man - darkness and light, god and beast combined."
    - The Wire (UK)

"Boyd Rice is a remarkable figure…[who] has never embarrassed himself with apologies, explanations or recantations. But the best evidence of his sincerity is the work itself. [Standing In Two Circles] is rich in humor and irony… but never at the expense of [Rice's] convictions. As an essayist, Boyd Rice is always entertaining and often quite profound…If you are a Boyd Rice fan, you probably already have this book. If you are not a fan, read it and you might become one."
    - The Occidental Quarterly (US)

"A must-read…Love [Boyd Rice] or hate him, the intelligent mind will be curious to know what lies within these tell-all pages."
    - Nocturnal (UK)

"Interesting reading…and includes many photographs…op-ed pieces…personal reminiscences…controversial pieces…[the collected works] reflect all the themes of the most misanthropic and controversial NON albums, with a heavy nod towards thinkers like Nietzsche, Oswald Spengler and Savitri Devi"

"A great read…A fun literary find for the fan, or just for someone looking into something a little under-the-radar."

I'm pleased to be asked to become a friend of this book. It's an outstanding book. What a pleasure it is to see (after 20 years) photos of the pioneering musicians, artists and thinkers who were a big part of the group Rice called "industrial," and to read about what they were doing. If you haven't read the book, take my word that there's a great deal of humor in it. The essay on Rice's prison visits to Manson (and their effects on the prison guards) would be a fine place to start.

I read one story from this book so far. It began with attending a bullfight and rapidly spiraled into an evening of fine debauchery at nightclubs in Spain. A beautifully written story, that it is! I look forward to reading more. Thank you for a masterful work of art!

I sometimes look at the world and those wonderful pieces of crap called people that swim around in it.  I think about how they just do not bother me anymore, but are simply roadblocks.  I like to flush them down the pipes of their own self made toilets, and laugh as they accelerate in a swirl to where they belong.  I could tell you how you have aided me, or inspired me even but I was here long before I had the pleasure of digesting your works.

I have no need to destroy the cultures or religions of the world.  I see them all necessary for the zombies who practice their own hypocrisies.  This keeps them away from me and provides me with beautiful art, or what some would call blasphemy.  With a never-mind approach I push down on the proverbial handle, and watch them swim away, far away from me.  So I destroy them without ever trying.

Good Morning, Magister Rice!  Yes I want....Total War.

    Hail Satan!

This book is an absolute pleasure to read from cover to cover. Mr. rice's various musings and insights on a truly vast array of subjects and personal experiences are consistently replete with the sharpest wit, humor, and brutal honesty (is there any other kind?).

Standing In Two Circles is perhaps the greatest 'tour reading' book ever written (certainly the most entertaining). However, I highly recommend it to anyone with a mind of their own-- regardless of the context in which you choose to enjoy it.

Bravo to you sir! Wild Wishes indeed!

GERM thanks Boyd Rice for comin' down from Denver on Saturday to make Fishtown feel briefly like Disneyland, Hatesville and Rennes le Chateau all rolled up into one big ginger apple rune cake.

    With chocolate frosting.

We also thank our ever-superior patrons – faces from Philly and faces far-flung (this was TRULY A REGIONAL EVENT) -- for making Boyd feel so welcome.
