   About Stanford Jazz Workshop
Founded in 1972, Stanford Jazz Workshop (SJW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to jazz education and appreciation. For more than three decades, SJW has been bringing the best jazz performers and educators together with students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Our summer education programs include Jazz Camp, Jazz Residency & Evening Summer. The annual Stanford Jazz Festival is a six-week long celebration of jazz, hailed by many as "the definitive American art form."

SJW’s faculty has included Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Ray Brown, Jimmy Cobb, Slide Hampton, Mulgrew Miller, Branford Marsalis, Ray Drummond, Mundell Lowe, Dena DeRose, Steve Davis, Jim Rotondi, the Heath Brothers, Sheila Jordan, Geri Allen, Jim Cullum, Phil Woods, and many others. Many emerging jazz stars are past participants of SJW programs, including Joshua Redman, Larry Grenadier, Bill Stewart, Sasha Dobson, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, Dayna Stephens, Ambrose Akinmusire and Jenny Scheinman.

The 2009 Stanford Jazz Workshop is still accepting applicants for admission in both of its summer programs, Jazz Camp (JC) & Jazz Residency (JR). This promises to be an exciting summer, both in performance and education, as we bring together a faculty spanning over 50 years of jazz history. At this point, the Workshop is actively recruiting drummers for all three weeks (JC 1 & 2, JR), as well as trumpet players and pianos (JR) and trombones (JC1, JR). Our faculty for all of these instruments is outstanding:

Drum Faculty, JR:
•    Jazz legend Louis Hayes, a longtime sideman to both Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderley who has enjoyed continued success as a bandleader in recent years.
•    Greg Hutchinson, one of the most powerful and prolific young drummers on the scene, and will have special classes with Tootie Heath and Donald "Duck" Bailey, both legendary figures and SJW favorites.
•    Jazz Campers will enjoy working with Tootie, as well as world-renowned session drummer Ndugu Chancler and Matt Wilson, whose one-of-a-kind style has made him the go-to sideman for Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz and many more.

•    JC 1’s trombone instructor is Dave Gregoric, Director of Jazz Studies at Valley Christian, who led his ensembles to first and second place finishes at the Monterey Next Generation, Folsom and Reno Jazz Festival competitions.
Piano:
•    Our stellar JR piano faculty includes Taylor Eigsti and David Hazeltine – for a complete faculty list, please visit the Stanford Jazz website at http://www.stanfordjazz.org/education/faculty.html.

To the folks at the Stanford Jazz Workshop-

I attended the workshop back in 91. What a wonderful experience. The clinicians were top shelf and the staff was fantastic. Best wishes,

Steve
