The Capricorn born Stanpipe (a.k.a Robert Chin) is an artiste of profound determination and enthusiasm. He hails from Jamaica, growing up amongst his Grandmother in a placed called “Stanpipe” in the Liguanea area of Kingston. He was also part of an extended musical family which included reggae icon Bob Marley, Freddie McGregor and Judy Mowatt and he was very much influenced by their music. His mother, Queen Minnie, owned and operated the famous Minnie's Vegetarian Restaurant and she also toured with Bob Marley & the Wailers as well as the I-Threes -- thereby his exposure to music at an early age. However, it was dancehall music that resonated most with him and he slowly crafted out his style which enabled him to embark on his own musical sojourn.
His father, Leroy Chin, founder and owner of the incredible “Sons Junior International” Sound System of Brooklyn, New York, played a vital role in exposing Stanpipe to the hardcore Dancehall crowd and prepared him to deliver his lyrical style to live audiences. It was his uncle, Cornell Chin, music selector of “Sons Junior International,” who gave Stanpipe the opportunity of chatting on the sound, gradually building up his repertoire of original compositions in and around New York City. Stanpipe’s first single, “Tell Him No” was recorded at Sons Junior International Recording Studios in New York and following its success, he released the song “Mirjam,” along with the video. It helped to put his name on the ‘reggae map.’ He then did the monster hit song and video, “Ghetto Youths,” featuring Natty Remo, following up with “Can’t Stop Loving You” with Freddie McGregor. His music has taken him to Europe, the USA, Africa and the Caribbean. Some of his more memorable performances were opening for Garnet Silk; performing at Island Village in Ocho Rios; and performing three years running on Junior Reid’s Birthday Bash alongside Ninja Man, Super Cat and Natty Remo. He has also made live appearances in several charity concerts, like the 1995 “University of Miami Community AIDS Awareness” event in Miami, and performing at the Malik Yoba, “Smart School Charter Middle Holiday Gala 2000” held at the Design Center of the Americas, Dania Beach, Florida.
Stanpipe is not just a singer/deejay, but he also does modeling and is currently signed to Tyson Talent Agency. Some of his works include the theme song for the “Faces of Football” project in the USA, ads for a chiropractor and City Furniture based in Florida, and for Ghana Television. He has just completed his first album, “Life’s Water,” and the idea behind naming the album/cd “Life’s Water” is that “water comes from ‘stanpipe’ and water is life.” The new album consist of sixteen songs which include the hit “Ghetto Youths,” with Natty Remo, “Can’t Stop Loving You,” with Freddie McGregor, “My Son,” the “Foreign Mind Remix”, featuring the one and only Junior Reid, and the brand new “Phat Blunt,” a Reggae/Rock/Hip-Hop track and video. He was assisted by producers “Computer” Paul Henton, Ed Robinson and I Paul. This new album will surely bring his fans around the world much closer home to his style and articulate musical delivery.
Stanpipe describes his music as a combination of love and the reality and culture of his island home - Jamaica. He says that ….”music soothes the savage beast……no matter how ‘bad’ a person is, they always listen to music to calm their soul. I want my music to unite the world into doing good.” An artist of profound determination and enthusiasm, Stanpipe has carved a good name for himself in the Reggae World, a natural gift from Jah and Jamaica.
A caliber reggae artist, Stanpipe will forever be standing tall in Reggae.
