THE VENUE

The Star And Shadow Cinema is in Battlefield, Newcastle Upon Tyne. You can find us on the corner of Stepney Bank and Crawhall Road, opposite the Tanners pub.

The nearest Metro station is Manors. Turn right out of the station, and turn right up New Bridge Street. You'll see us on the right about 5 minutes walk up the road, next to the Tanners.

Buses 6B, 12, 22, 39, 40, 62, 63, 106, 301, 302 all stop just around the corner. Ask for the New Bridge Street stop, or mention the Tanners pub.

There is no car park at the cinema but if you arrive by bike you can park and lock it inside the building.

The bar, cinema and toilets are all fully wheelchair accessible. As yet we do not have a hearing loop system, but we do plan to install one as soon as possible.

THE ORGANISATION

The Star And Shadow Cinema is a registered Community Interest Company. This puts us somewhere between a normal company (without the emphasis on profit) and a charity (without the restrictions on what we can do). The company is run entirely by volunteer members, with all members having a say in what we do and how we do it.

Our aim is to show a truly independent programme of inspirational and inspired films as cheaply as possible, as well as providing a venue for artists and musicians of all varieties. We are creating a cosy venue to provide a haven from the mundane mainstream of film and music, a nursery for independent creativity and thinking.

We do not exist to make a profit, our purpose is to provide a facility for programming the types of films and events that do not happen at other venues around Newcastle. These may be locally made or inspired films, art films, political films, international films, gay and lesbian films, classic films or independent cinema, local musicians, international musicians, or artists and storytellers of all kinds.

The cinema also has a social space which has a quiet bar and cafe. The aim for The Star And Shadow Cinema is to provide a venue that will let people become involved in the running of the cinema and for it to be a real co-operative place.

We have always worked as a volunteer group and this new cinema will run in the same way. We hope with this new cinema there will be even more scoVolunteering

If you would like to contribute then please get in touch by calling 0191 261 0066 or emailing info@starandshadow.org.uk. For information on signing-up to our mailing lists please click on "Email Alerts" on the right.

We have various working groups and meetings to make things happen - e.g. programme group, bar group, finance group - see Get Involved for more info.

Gigs, Parties & Club Nights

Our 110 capacity venue can be used for bands, club nights and parties. We have an okay PA and some fab disco lights. To find out more mail gigs@starandshadow.org.uk

Private Hire

The cinema and its social spaces are available to hire for cultural events - e.g. workshops and film screenings. Please email for details.

We would love for as many people to get involved as possible.

Submissions

We are keen to receive and show YOUR films or video. Please send film or video on any format to the address on the "The Venue" page for consideration.

History

To give you a bit more history on where we have come from, our old venue - the Side Cinema was first opened in the late 1970s by Amber Films to show radical and independent film, but closed in the 1980s. From October 2001 to December 2005, Cineside, Tyneside Radical Film Festival, A-Side and Other side programmed, ran and promoted it. In 2006 we moved to a new purpose built space on Stepney Bank for more people to be involved.
Kimle tanışmak isterim:

We are always looking for people to work with us to share the work.

Every one who volunteers chooses how much time they dedicate to the cinema, and what roles they want to take on.

You can volunteer for a job, a one-off occasion, a regular weekly slot – however it best fits with you.

Some of this work you need to be in the cinema. Some of it you don’t. Some of it helps if you have a car. We have computers for computer work but a lot of it can be done from any computer.

Perks of the job – apart form the warm glow you get from making the Star and Shadow light up – are a free film in exchange for a shift you work and cheaper drinks while you are working.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER

If you would like to volunteer, whether that be with a particular skill or resource or a general enthusiasm to make the cinema run there are a number of ways to get involved.

* Come to a screening / event early and talk to us * Come to a meeting (see below) * Send us an email info@starandshadow.org.uk or call the office 0191 261 0066 (answerphone if no-one in) * Sign up to the volunteers mailing list. Send a blank email to volunteers-subscribe@lists.starandshadow.org.uk

This email list has information send to it about when there are specific jobs that need to be done, minutes of all our meetings and occasional responses to these that are necessary for all volunteers to see. Any signed up volunteer can post to this list. Replies will automatically be sent to the sender rather than the whole list so your inbox will not be filled unintentionally! Inductions

The cinema has some systems in place which are there to make things easier for everyone and to make the cinema safe. We run inductions to working at the cinema – 2nd Saturday of every month at 11am – or you can have your own induction if you come in about an hour before the first shift you do and someone with the know-how will show you the ropes. Meetings

We have regular meetings every Monday at 6pm at the cinema. There is a flat (or no) hierarchy and anyone coming to a meeting can be involved in our consensus decision making.

Our meetings are:

* 1st Monday of the month – General meeting * 2nd Monday of the month – Programming meeting * 3rd Monday of the month – General meeting * 4th Monday of the month – Programming and publicity meeting * 5th Monday (when it occurs) – Social (we do something nice and don’t minute it!)

Hello. Please do delete this comment if you so wish.

We're just making sure that everyone knows that our debut album 'Horses For Courses' is available to buy from our little record label's online shop:

http://www.donttellclare.co.uk/shop.htm

Its been selling faster than we expected, and we currently only have around a quarter of our stock left - so we thought we'd better you all know that if you want a copy then now would be a good time to pick one up! If you buy it from the link above then you're buying it direct from us, the label aren't taking a cut - so its a bit like Fair Trade for struggling musicians.

International mail-order is available, just follow the instructions.

Thank you very much, and sorry for making a mess of your profile. If its any kind of consolation, we don't have a MySpace bot, so I'm leaving these comments the old fashioned way. Three -and-a-half thousand of them. My life is so exciting.

Lots of love
Das Wanderlust

Hey hey, excuse the spam. . .

"blending low-level hip-hop beats with Scorn-esque bass and elonated guitar riffs to remarkable effect. . . it's that awesome. . . the music is superb, the artwork and packaging equally good. . . [it's] warped shuffling genius. 300% necro, foo'! (5/5)" (Zero Tolerance magazine).

Necro Deathmort's This Beat Is Necrotronic is released on Distraction Records on August 31st, but you can get your hands on it for FREE (on a 'if you like it, why not buy the CD?' basis) in all of its 320kps mp3 glory at distractionrecords.com!
