STAREWELL is a hard rock, rock ‘n’ roll, pop-rock or metal band, depending on your age/gender and how you relate to ‘what they do’ as musicians. To one person they are reminiscent of the Stone Temple Pilots, or Audioslave. To another, STAREWELL "bends the strings like April Wine", and draws comparisons to Guns’ n’ Roses, The Foo Fighters, Collective Soul and Tesla in reviews. On stage STAREWELL’s heavy handed rock n’ roll spirit and grimy “we don’t care what you think” appeal , has allowed them to fit comfortably with classics such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Nazareth, as well as with contemporaries like The Trews, Hinder and Papa Roach.
When STAREWELL first turned heads in 2006 with the release of Those Who Matter –their sophomore independently promoted album—it was almost unbelievable that the lead single “Blurrier” became a top 20 hit on the Canadian rock charts. Two years later when the follow up album, Broke & Out of Money repeated the same feat with the title track holding down a spot on the ‘scrolls’ for almost half a year, it wasn’t so unbelievable. More importantly the band felt genuine reciprocation from the fans for having a single like “Broke and out of money”. When asked why this was the case, Brett Simms, the band’s lead singer/guitar player, said “our new single is socially conscious and relevant to what many people are feeling—a broken spirit and an empty bank account”.
Chris Rozell the band’s bassist agrees, “as an album, Broke and out of money reveals a more aggressive and intelligent side to our music”. "Tracks like ‘28’ reflect the band’s maturity and willingness to experiment with a little Iron Maiden”, jokes Rozell. “I hope fans get hear this album in it’s entirety because it’s really our best work”.
Wade Simms the drummer for the 3-piece adds, “I think fans will finally get a glimpse into the STAREWELL diary with songs like ‘Down on Me’ and ‘Straight line baby’. Some of these songs are first hand accounts of our lives and of life on the road". Even the fear and greed behind their booming hometown, Calgary, Alberta, is addressed in the songs "High Society" and "Anymore".
Through and through, the new STAREWELL album Broke and out of money oozes ferocity and the character that can only be described as "the way things are".
