What started off as a couple of teenage kids sitting on their butts playing guitars and video games, are now a hard working, determined rock band formed right in the Hammer. The journey of a thousand miles all started with a single riff. While attending a party one night in 2003, Bill Smith was observing a guitar riff being played by a good buddy named Joe Towers. Upon hearing Towers strange riff, Smith requested that he try playing it upside down to hear how it would sound if it were altered, so then the riff was replayed upside down and backwards and was immediately praised by Smith. Based on the knowledge that Towers had a few drinks that night, Smith then proceeded with the following statement towards him; If you forget that riffI will kill you! Needless to say, the riff was not forgotten, it quickly became a song that later ended up on Starfurys 12 song studio demo-album, the track was titled Bermuda Dyslexia.
The two immediately clicked and decided to start writing music together consisting of Smith playing rhythm guitar and writing a majority of the lyrics and Towers doing some guest and backing vocals along with writing the lead guitar. While working on new material one day, a long time close friend from Nova Scotia by the name of Jason Lynch was in attendance, so Smith and Towers decided to show Lynch a couple of their tunes. After hearing the first song, Lynch seemed very intrigued and requested to become part of the project and was immediately recruited without hesitation. Although starting off as a very talented guitar player, Jason Lynch developed a smooth, unique knack for the bass guitar and has taken the duties of the bass to contribute to the sound that is Starfury.
The trio took what they had, expanded their sound to new heights, wrote loads of new songs and eventually came up with the first actual name of the band which was originally titled Shrub to which the band, friends and family thought was hilarious and they knew wouldnt last very long. Through hours and days of brainstorming, with combined efforts and arguments, the band diplomatically settled on the name Starfury. Roughly after a year and a half, an official band name, and about two full length albums worth of material, Starfury was nearly ready to get out and start playing, but one important element was still missing, a drummer. Through months and months of soul searching, the trio went through countless unreturned phone calls from unreliable people, and the band had begun to grow frustrated and discouraged but hadnt lost total faith yet. As luck would have it, the band was finally graced with a driven, talented young man by the name of P.J. Reynolds who was discovered by Joe Towers at a party in 2005 while randomly jamming together, Towers realized the undeniable skill and wild style that Reynolds possessed and the two decided to hook up and set up a little tryout. At the jam, the entire band was in aw when they all realized that they had just found the final ingredient based upon Reynolds swift ability to blend with the music so well with a smooth chemistry, a positive mental attitude, and great presence as well. Reynolds is the latest and youngest addition to the band and already possesses loads of experience and raw talent necessary to complete the sound, and-then-some. At that moment, Starfury was truly born, and were ready to rock.
Each member come from different walks of life and have different musical tastes which creates such an interesting and diverse sound. So far, Starfury are now a growing phenomenon with a strong passion that are ripping it up beneath the city with their powerful audio vortex that keeps their audiences entertained and coming back for more. But Starfury has dreams of reaching bigger heights, playing larger venues, and getting their music out to as many people as possible and will stop at nothing to reach their goals. Starfury were born to rock and do not plan on giving up anytime soon. Starfury also sends out a special thanks to all the people who have been so supportive to their music and their act and will never take any of it for granted, without you all, it may not have been possible. So, on behalf of Starfury; Thank you, and ROCK ON!!!
