Influences
Pixies, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Sex Pistols, The Beatles, The Fall, Bikini Kill, Souixsie and the Banshees, early Cure, Iggy and the Stooges, David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, U2, Tom Petty, Queens of the Stone Age, The Police, New Wave, Punk, Raggae, Dub, Lee Perry, King Tubby. Hating stuff...
Star Kicking were formed when Alan and Emily met at a mutual friends 21st birthday party, in August 2005. They hit it off and realised one was a guitarist, the other a drummer. At Alan's home, he played Emily some of his music on CD.
She liked it and the pair jammed at her house the next day. First monikers included Art Sonic Diaspora before settling on Star Kicking, after Emily viewed some horror videos. The name refers to a medieval torture method, when star shaped pieces of paper with oil were lit between victims' toes, and some kicking would ensue...
A bass player was needed to complete the trio, and two weeks later Dimitrios
showed up on a motorcycle, replete with Greek accent and a nice touch on the bass guitar. He was to learn the songs fast, and from rehearsing through Autumn, Star Kicking played its first show on 27th November 2005 at the International Bar, Dublin.
The timing was good, as in the crowd was young Mossy O'Connell, who liked our music, and provided the PA that night and every night there after.
He got us into a recording studio by January and what you're hearing is the result. Copies of this EP: "When the Shit Hits the Fans", are available for a mere 3 euro, mainly at gigs. Our finest hour so far is playing Reservoir 3 at Crawdaddy, 10th May 2006, courtesy of entertainment.ie
Some more gigs were played this summer, 2006, culminating in a review by Johnnie Craig in 'In Dublin' magazine in July. Positive stuff.
And there is a review/ interview in the February 2006 edition of Connected magazine. Next to one on Cathy Davey, no less.
Unfortunately, Emily decided to leave us at this time to play in another band.
Dimitrios went to explore new territories, volunteering work for the Summer.
A new drummer was found in October, a Mr Gary Vitagliano of Boston, USA.
Formally of US rockers Gladiola.
It took just one rehearsal in Loop Studios to gel a 40 minute set for a gig.
Dimitrios decided to repatriate in June, after some our best shows.
The search for a new bassist did not last long, Alan found Ronan through an ad in a paper he posted.
Ronan is multi-talented, and has his own songs available at www.myspace.com/decodersville.
Alan and Ronan have been practicing and recording at a house in South Dublin.
Gary went to the USA again, this time for the 4th of July holiday, and never regrouped with the band.
Then Ronan called it a day after 3 months, frustrated by the lack of beats, suposin'.
So the search for a reliable drummer (and bassist) goes on. And it appears to be over, as Vincent Groves and Marky have joined the band. Meanwhile, many gig offers in Dublin, Galway and Leeds, UK are in store. The band are looking forward to playing damn loud in a venue near you soon!
And that brings us up to date, so far...
