Choose to Bless the World At Starr King we place radical trust in the possibilities that lie within human beings. As a Unitarian Universalist seminary with a hundred-year liberal and liberating tradition, we approach education as an engaged, relational practice through which human beings develop their gifts and deepen their calling to be of service in the world. Because of our mission and identity as a Unitarian Universalist school, we're open to students with a variety of religious backgrounds, interests and identities. The majority of Starr King graduates become Unitarian Universalist parish ministers. Some specialize in religious education or community ministries. Others offer religious leadership to society as lay people working in education, social services, the arts, politics, health care and more. We are a member of the Graduate Theological Union www.gtu.edu, which allows our students to take courses at any of the nine member schools and at the University of California, Berkeley, located just a few blocks from our campus. Through the GTU, we are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. Our Degrees We offer a Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Religious Leadership for Social Change, a Master of Arts (through the Graduate Theological Union) and a Seminary for the Laity certificate. Our online education program (www.online.sksm.edu) offers graduate-level, semester courses, and some Saturday Intensive courses are available at our campus. Educating to Counter Oppressions and Create Just Communities The mission, theological vision and educational philosophy of the school support us in educating to counter oppressions. In our work we strive to embody what we hope to see in the world -- a just, loving humanity and community in which people are free to be themselves fully and without fear. A community where no one is exiled, silenced or exploited because of gender, gender expression, race, color, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual/affectional orientation, age, class, physical character or disability. Our Educational Practices Starr King School emphasizes student-centered, holistic learning that cultivates habits for successful ministry and effective religious leadership through individualized courses of study, intensive advising, high standards of scholarship and practical engagement with congregations and communities.
