About STARTERHEAD

Starterhead was formed in Örebro,Sweden 2002. After some demos the first fullenght album "inside"was released in April 2006 through Indark Music. "Inside" was recorded at Fascination Street Studios,Örebro and produced and mixed by Jens Bogren(Opeth,Katatonia). In June 2007 Starterhead went back to Fascination Street to record album nr.2 with the working title "undergrounding",with Conny Pettersson from Anata behind the drums and Simon Solomon(Flushed,Bloodbath) on guitar. Once again with Jens as the producer. In the beggining of August seven songs were recorded and mixed. "The Last Words "(full version)and "Underground"(sample)is taken from"undergrounding".

When I reviewed Starterhead's debut 2 years ago I compared their, or rather his (Petter Dennevi is the sole member of the band), craft to Katatonia and Opeth. It's been a while since I listened to the album (2006's Inside) and I don't know if that reference still holds up but this time around Starterhead comes off as far more rocking than I remember them. The deep growls still remind me of Dan Swanö and Mikael Åkerfelt but the music is far harder to categorize. Dark Metal is the epiteth Dennevi seems to prefer and I can definitely agree with that but I'd prefer if the word Rock found it's way into the description as that is a vital ingredient on Undergrounding. What elevates this far beyond its predecessor, which was a good disc in its own right, is the addition of a live drummer. It makes all the difference and is probably what adds the rocking nerve to the new material.

It's hard to pick out the best tracks here as I feel they're all pretty damn catchy but pressed for an answer I'd have to mention the heavy-as-fuck titletrack which opens up with a doomladen Candlemass-esque riff to die for. The chorus is lead-heavy as well! As said though there are more kick ass tracks to be found here and I think they're all up for grabs when it comes to picking out a "best song".

I find it surprising that Starterhead hasn't gained much attention as of yet as I feel their music should appeal to a wide array of metal fans. Anyone into the aforementioned bands or melodic doomy death metal in general should give this a go!
