Nicola, Live at Starving Artist, Saturday, March 14, 2009
..
In May of 1997, Elliott Glick opened up the Starving Artist Gallery on City Island, New York. That original venue on City Island Avenue featured his own handmade jewelry, and the fine art / fine craft work of local artisans. This included handmade boxes, pottery, paintings and photographs.
In February 2004, Glick decided that there were another group of artists - music-artists - that needed a venue. A singer-songwriter himself, he wanted to create a space to provide a forum for that art form. So he kept Starving Artist on City Island and moved it down the street a block - in a space where he could have more room for tables and chairs, and for these musicians and songwriters. Since that 2004 opening, there have been hundreds of performances by songwriters, blues musicians, jazz performers; see a sample here.
JOE IADANZA Returns On Friday November 20 @8pm
There have also been cultural and other celebrations - for Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras, of Renaissance music - as well as young musicians nights where Glick encourages teens and young adults to pursue their musical talents and dreams. ..On Saturday, February 7, 2009 - the exact day and date the cafe opened in 2004 - Starving Artist CAFE celebrated its fifth anniversary. See some moments from owner / songwriter Elliott Glick's performance that night in the slideshow above.
Starving Artist's "menu" - besides handmade jewelry, fine art / craft and great music - includes cafe food offerings including fresh fruit and cheese basket, "macho" nachos, delicious spinach dip served with pita and crackers, Elliott's worldclass meatballs as a sandwich or platter, our signature panini grilled sandwiches (each artfully prepared), as well as fresh salads with our homemade dressings. There are also the Starving Artist "delights" - our mile-high apple pie and our very own chocolate volcano dessert. In the way of drinks, we offer some "blasts from the past" including egg creams (chocolate and vanilla) and cherry-lime rickeys, too!
We don't charge a cover or minimum for music performances, but everyone who is "in the house" must order something from our menu, and is asked to contribute to the "music appreciation box" (an offering of their own choosing).
The Starving Artist, besides being a "fun" place, is a "games" spot as well. Tables feature "trivial pursuit" question cards, as well as games such as pickup sticks, dominoes, and playing cards.
We are located at 249 City Island Avenue (two-and-a-half blocks past the third traffic light on City Island Avenue; look for the maroon awning between Carroll and Schofield Streets). Reservations are suggested for performances. You can call (718) 885-3779 or e-mail us. In the meantime, here's a look at Starving Artist's first five years (2004 through 2009) in a slideshow. ..
Music gives people a voice that is uniquely theirs......... This can happen through an instrument or in the way that music helps people identify both simple and complex emotions........ At its best, music transports one into a different world..... When one returns to the normal world one has a greater perspective on existence!!!!!!!!!! Good vibes and friendship....Amalia Amanda xx
Don't let time fly by while you stand watching helplessly. Live for today, forget about yesterday and try not to focus on tomorrow. Hug your children. Kiss your lover. Exist only in the moment. That moment is now. Live it, love it, and cherish it forever. ~NsL 11/19/2009
