IT was round 19 and the Sunshine Coast were coming up against a resurgent Easts Tigers at Stockland Park.
The Sea Eagles were entering the match under a weight of expectation after having their mid-season purple patch snapped in a surprise draw with competition cellar dwellers Ipswich the week before.
Their season was on the line and the Sunshine Coast answered any lingering doubts about their premiership potential in resounding fashion – with a 54-10 flogging of the Tigers.
It was at this moment that backrower Vic Mauro started to believe.
After a disappointing opening half of the season, including three wins and seven losses, there were many pundits writing off the Queensland Cup newcomers.
However their turnaround has been one of the feel good stories of the year.
Mauro says the side learnt a lesson in their win over the Tigers, a lesson which will serve them well in today’s Grand Final.
“I remember the first six to eight weeks we really struggled,” he said.
“We weren’t gelling well together. But that was to be expected. We were always going to struggle with us boys coming up, coming into a new team.
“There was a point not too long ago, against Easts, when we beat them 56-10. We played the full 80 minutes. We just really stuck it out, that’s really taught us to grind out the full 80.
“That was the point when we realised we were really in with a chance and came together as a group.”
A member of the club’s Manly contingent, Mauro has been a quiet yet consistent performer this year, playing 20 of the side’s 24 matches.
His contribution in and around the ruck has helped to establish the Sea Eagles pack as one of the most dominant in the Queensland Cup.
He said the side had gained a massive psychological boost from beating competition benchmarks Souths-Logan last week, leading them to believe they were
capable of rolling any pack they come up against.
“It was a very surreal feeling after the (Souths-Logan) game, because we only came back in the last five minutes,” he said.
“It just goes to show if you hang in there for 80. We did the task there and we’ve got to realise we’ve got one more game to go. To play rugby league you’ve got to be level headed, and play this week’s game for the whole game.”
WESTERN Districts skipper Shannon Fish always knew the Panthers would rise to the occasion if the FOGS Cup grand final against the star-studded Redcliffe Dolphins went right down to the wire.
And that’s exactly how it panned out for the never-say-die Panthers, who kicked a penalty goal and scored a converted try in the concluding stages of last Saturday’s gripping decider to come away with a memorable 30-24 victory.
“I knew we were going to finish strong,” Fish revealed.
“Redcliffe had the first week off in the finals, and then they had an easy win over Souths Logan.
“We had two or three hard matches going into the final.”
Despite taking on an experienced Dolphins outfit that included Queensland Cup premiership-winning trio Mick Roberts, Grant Flugge and Adam Starr, the inspirational Panthers captain thought his team could get the job done.
“I was confident. We were building to something pretty good,” Fish said.
“I think we had won something like 10 out of our last 12 games going into the game.”
Under the astute coaching of Craig Ingebrigtsen, the Panthers enjoyed a great grand final preparation.
The squad based itself on the Sunshine Coast and completed a solid hit out at Stockland Park on the eve of the big match.
With a host of former Dolphins in their side and the opportunity to create a slice of history, the Panthers were always going to be hungry for premiership success on game day.
The match itself lived up to the pre-game hype, with fans thoroughly enjoying the spectacle.
“The crowd was awesome,” Fish said.
“It was such a good atmosphere because the supporters are so close to the ground.”
The victory capped off an unforgettable season for Fish, who was originally going to sit out the year until he received a call from Ingebrigtsen.
“I knew 'Trigger' and he gave me a phone call, so I thought why not,” Fish said.
The tough hooker said he had plenty of “fun” throughout the year with the Panthers, who are likely to retain the majority of the 2009 squad for another assault on the FOGS Cup title next year.
Fish nominated Adam Breen and Matt Church as the Panthers’ two standout performers from the grand final.
Church was inspirational from the back, while Breen showed his class with three stunning tries.
“He is one of the best finishers I have seen,” Fish said of Breen, who crossed for 20 tries in the regular season

Souths Logan Magpies.
A sea of black and white swarmed over the North Ipswich Reserve today as the Souths Logan Magpies clinched the Queensland Wizard Cup with an epic 24-18 victory over the Ipswich Jets.
In an amazing match, the Magpies sealed the win in the final minute of play when Kyle Lodge broke out of a desperate tackle to snap an 18-18 deadlock.
Referee Justin Eastwood went to the video referee, who ruled a fair try despite protests of a double movement.
An army of Magpies supporters invaded the ground before the conversion had been taken, sparking wild scenes as the proud club celebrated a maiden Queensland Wizard Cup premiership
“This is one of the best feelings ever. I’m just so pumped right now,” said star Magpies fullback Quentin Laulu Togagae.
“Even at the end, I knew we could get it done. We just had to believe in ourselves.”
Magpies assistant coach Mark Tookey praised his team’s courage.
“We only had one interchange left with about 15 minutes to go,” Tookey said.
“There were three blokes who kept telling us they have to come off. I just sent the message out, ‘I don’t care if you’re about to die, you’re staying on’.
“I’ve never had premiership success at this level and it’s just a great achievement for everyone in the club.”
Jets skipper Danny Coburn heaped praise on the Magpies in his post-match speech and thanked his own players for a tremendous season.
The Jets paid the price for a sloppy first-half.
Ipswich made a nightmare start, with prop Aaron Sweeney losing the ball after being crunched in the opening tackle of the game.
The more intense Magpies made the Jets pay when Cy Lasscock sliced through to score.
Souths Logan pulled further in front in the seventh minute when crafty hooker McKanah Gibson snuck over from dummy half.
Tim Cannard landed the conversion to make it 10-0.
The Jets first real scoring opportunity came after 22 minutes when outstanding young forward Kurtis Lingwoodock received a perfect inside pass and set sail for the try-line.
But the video referee ruled that Lingwoodock had lost the ball over the line.
Just as the Jets looked to be gaining the ascendancy, Souths Logan winger Mat Templeman intercepted an Ian Lacey pass and sprinted 50m to score.
Cannard converted for a 16-0 lead.
Souths Logan’s ferocious defence continually repelled the Jets, who spilt the ball close to the line on numerous occasions in the first half.
The Magpies took an 18-0 lead into half-time after Josh White kicked a penalty goal.
The massive contingent of Ipswich fans who packed into the North Ipswich Reserve finally had something to cheer about in the 44th minute when Michael Ryan sliced through to score.
The momentum was firmly with the Jets when Donald Malone scored in the corner from a lucky grubber kick deflection.
Josh Lewis raised the flags, although a furious Souths Logan camp claimed the ball had missed to the right upright.
It proved to be a crucial ruling as the scores were soon locked up when big prop Aaron Sweeney scored an outstanding solo try and Lewis converted.
Both sides traded field goal attempts but it was not a one-pointer which decided the result.
The Magpies set up for a field goal in the final minute, but caught the Jets napping when Alby Talipeau elected to run the ball.
The ball found its way to Lodge, who did the rest to win the game.
Talipeau received the Duncan Hall Medal as the game’s best and fairest player.
SOUTHS LOGAN 24 (Kyle Lodge, Cy Lasscock, McKanah Gibson, Mat Templeman tries; Tim Cannard 2, Josh White 2 goals) def IPSWICH 18 (Michael Ryan, Donald Malone, Aaron Sweeney tries; Josh Lewis 3 goals).

Whether we like it or not, professional sports stars have a responsibility as role models in society - meaning there are some general standards we must try to uphold.
I don't want to sound like I'm some sort of white knight here - I'm certainly no angel - but I do know the difference between right and wrong, when enough is enough and when there is trouble brewing.
In my experience at the Brisbane Broncos, the NSW Waratahs and the Wallabies, the core group of senior players among any team of professional athletes are basically the ones responsible for keeping the peace and enforcing order.
There's no hard and fast written code of conduct among the players, but if anyone starts making unnecessary waves, then it's up to the leaders of the group to resolve the issue.
I'm talking everything from minor differences about tactics during team meetings, to making younger blokes feel part of the squad, to the more serious dilemma of pulling blokes into line if their egos start getting the better of them.
I remember at the Broncos, and I was one of the younger players, if anyone started getting a little bit too far ahead of themselves, then Gorden Tallis or Shane Webcke would pull you aside.
At the Waratahs, it's Phil Waugh. Basically, they have a word to you. It's a bit of a horses for courses approach. If it needs to be a rocket then it will be. Or if it needs to be a bit more subtle, then that's the tack they take.
When it happens, it's not really a pleasant experience. It's not unpleasant, but it's firm and it's direct and you walk out of there knowing that you've let your teammates down. And that is a cardinal sin.
Generally, you only need to be spoken to once to understand the message.
The great thing about it is that you begin to understand how your actions, often when you've been having a few beers, can actually have a negative impact on the whole team. It can lead to TV cameras at training every day, reporters ringing everyone up and basically the whole team being turned into a circus.
In regard to the issue of professional sports people being role models, that just goes with the territory. The whole reason we get paid to play football in the first place is because of the huge money generated by television contracts, sponsorship dollars and most importantly, the fans who attend the games.
Without all these factors, there would be no opportunity to lead the life we do. Personally, I feel it's a very privileged existence.
If part of that territory means being aware of your surroundings when you're having a beer and trying to make sure you don't put yourself in a position where you're vulnerable, then so be it.
