The following has been adapted from the book, The Circus Fire, by Stewart O’Nan. These words have come to sum up The Station Fire Memorial Foundation’s mission.
To be lost and forgotten -
to be abandoned - is a shared and terrible fear, just as our fondest hope, as we grow older, is that we might leave some part of us behind in the hearts of those we love and in that way live on. We may not be able to change what has been, but we can certainly change WHAT IS. Support The Station Fire Memorial Foundation and help us to give the victims the only gift within our power, a gift we wish desperately for our loved ones, a gift we all want...
TO BE REMEMBERED.

The Station Fire Memorial Foundation is an all volunteer, 501[c]3 charitable organization, committed to remembering the precious lives of those lost and the countless lives changed forever on February 20, 2003. The Foundation’s mission is to procure the land known as the Station site, ensure a proper memorial is erected and also maintain it. The Foundation encourages maximum support and participation by all those affected by the Station fire to give the victims the only gift within our power, a gift we wish desperately for our loved ones, a gift we all want . . . to be remembered.
Family members and friends of the 100 cherished people who died as a direct result of the Station Fire founded the Station Fire Memorial Foundation in June 2003. Our purpose is to ensure that our loved ones would receive a proper and timely memorial upon the sacred ground where their lives were so tragically cut short. It is our intent that the Foundation will procure the land known as the Station Site and not only build but maintain the Memorial site and as such, fundraising is expected to be long-term. The Foundation encourages maximum participation by affected Family members and Survivors of the tragedy. The families of the 100 will choose the final Memorial design. All designs received containing the following 4 critical elements would be submitted to the families for approval:
It will be a celebration of the lives of the 100 lost directly as a result of the fire. It will personalize them and allow each a separate area for family offerings.
It will contain a type of interactive kiosk, which holds survivor stories, possibly including videotaped interviews.
It will commemorate the 1st responders efforts
It will contain pertinent parts of the temporary memorials left at the site since the fire, including the heart made by Paul Bertolo for the 1st Anniversary.
We do have for sale, T shirts, bumper stickers and a cookbook with recipes collaborated from people affect by the Station Fire.

ATTENTION VICTIMS' FAMILIES AND SURVIVORS
We still need your help in creating the most fitting and proper memorial to our loved ones'.
As we begin creating the design for a permanent memorial, it becomes increasingly more important for SFMF to reach out and gather input from victims’ families and survivors. We want to insure all those who wish to participate have the opportunity to do so. It has been the organization’s goal to have all 100 families represented during all phases of the memorial project, including the actual design creation, the selection of the final design, the actual construction, and maintenance. We also want to insure that all survivors who wanted to contribute to the memorial could do so.
To have every family contribute, and have their personal element added to the actual memorial design, would be the ideal outcome for the permanent memorial. Information on the Station Fire Memorial Design Search, including design guidelines, the voting process, and choosing the final memorial design, can be found on our Design Search page.
If you would like to send us your memorial idea, you can send your response to our PO Box or via an email to SFMF@cox.net.
