SHW came to be out of a common hate of boredom and love of wrestling. Shortly after midnight on January 1, 2002, longtime friends Steven Clark, Justin Gerhardt, Mark Massey, and Aaron Plenske headed out to Steve's frontyard armed with cardboard boxes, wrapping paper rolls, notebooks, and pretty much anything left over from Christmas they could find. Granted cardboard and notebooks are in no way hardcore, but having just watched a countdown of the best wrestling matches of 2001, the adrenaline was flowing and the unanimous decision was to head outside.
Originally dubbed SFW(Staunton Frontyard Wrestling), the four guys set up little rivalries and two tag teams between themselves. Mark and Justin became the infamous Sugar Brothers, while Steve and Aaron would later become the ruthless Mosh Pit. All through Christmas break the frontyard was a battleground, until one day people driving by thought they were witnessing an actual fight and reported it to the police. The police came and told them to take the display to the back if they planned on continuing. Thus the title SHW came to be. With a new "arena" birthed in the backyard also came a birth of a new ideal in the minds of SHW roster. The wrestling got more innovative and trickier. The moves were more high impact, cardboard and notebooks were starting to be replaced with steel chairs and sheet metal. Falling to the ground pretending to be hurt mutated into being thrown through steel shed doors and breaking ribs.
As this happened, more and more friends starting hearing the buzz about SHW. The roster gained participants. Crowds started forming in the backyard of Steve's house that were too big. Rather than be shut down, SHW found a new home just outside of Staunton on a farm owned by one of SHW's best participants in "Triple R" Ryan Ruschhaupt.
This vast new home led to larger crowds, better matches, hotter rivalries, even television and local media coverage. Since 2002, SHW has been featured in the Star-Times, the Kwik Konnection, the Charter Communications network on "The Wild World of Wrestling", and even national television station VH1 on a show called "Totally Obsessed." To sum all this up, Staunton Hardcore Wrestling has not and will NEVER FUCK AROUND.
