Steel Paintbrush is a Tattoo & Body Piercing Studio with a large studio in Durham City.
We have three tattooists (Kev, Leanne & Martin) & one piercer (Kim).
We have lots of information in our blogs - aftercare, news and views of the body modification world, aftercare advice, tutorials on different procedures as well as pictures and guides on lots of other related topics. TATTOOS
We have a wide variety of tattoo designs available; however we also do custom work. Bring us a design you would like tattooing (if needed, we can alter it for you). Our tattooists can handle all styles of work, from Japanese to tribal, new skool to black & grey work, cover ups, re-works and everything in between! All our staff have a lot of experience and portfolios are available on request in the shops - you can also check out some of our work (which is regularly updated) in our photo albums on MySpace.
All tattoos are done with SINGLE USE NEEDLES (thrown away after being used once), fresh inks and equipment which is fully sterilized after each client using the most up-to-date techniques. All aftercare advice is given in our Tattoo Aftercare sheets - see blog for more info!
Our tattooists are capable of all types of tattooing, but they do specialize in different styles individually. With a combined experience of well over 40 years, our tattooists can give advice on all aspects of tattooing, and all are well versed in custom work. Kev has been tattooing since 1977 and enjoys traditional Japanese work and old school style. Leanne began tattooing in 2005. She specializes in new school/old school designs and anything with a lot of colour, but also enjoys black and grey work (www.myspace.com/tattoos_by_leanne). Martin is our black and grey specialist, who also does some fantastic portrait work. He also enjoys japanese and old school work, especially in black and grey (www.myspace.com/trusttattoo).
THINKING ABOUT YOUR 1ST TATTOO? We will answer your "stupid questions" as you always call them! (There is no such thing as a stupid question!) Our tattooists are all EXTREMELY patient (great for nervous clients OR 1st-time tattooees). See our blogs for descriptions and walk-throughs of the tattooing and piercing procedure.
If you have a tattoo which has been started somewhere else, which needs finishing, or you need one of your tattoos tidying up or ‘re-working’, all our tattooists will be able to help you, as well as discussing your options. If the tattoo is 'beyond repair' or you really don't want it anymore, cover ups are an alternative. We will discuss all possibilities with you, and we also offer laser removal (see blog for details!).
PAIN FREE TATTOOING AVAILABLE! We offer a pain-free tattooing service upon request (please ask at time of booking). An anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be tattooed, then covered with an airtight dressing. It takes approximately 1 hour for the anaesthetic to take affect, the skin usually turns pink and you may experience a tingling sensation. After removing the dressing, the tattooing process is much less painful (most people find they can only feel a slight pressure from the needle, no pain). The service costs £5 per tube (larger designs require more tubes – see our blog or ask in the studios for more details).
Our tattoo prices are very competitive and we can give quotes on custom designs, our custom rate is £60 per hour. We can usually gauge roughly how long pieces will take. Flash designs (on the walls/in the folders) start from £25, or bring in one of your own and get a quote. We don't charge extra for bringing in your own design, nor do we change our prices depending on where on your body you want the tattoo.
UV TATTOOS! We are proud to offer UV tattoos using Crazy Chameleon ink! Both ‘clear’ ink, that is only visible under UV light once healed as well as coloured ink that will react to UV light. See our blog and photos section for info, and call in and see us for a quote or to chat about it.
LASER TATTOO REMOVAL
We now offer laser tattoo removal! Our ADL laser unit is portable and available in Durham as well as other studios in Hexham, Consett & Whitley Bay.
BY APPOINTMENT ONLY!!! Call into the relevant studio to make an appointment.
Prices for laser treatment start from £50 PER SESSION. More than one session is required to remove tattoos. We cannot give accurate advice without seeing your tattoo 'in the flesh'

BODY PIERCING & MODIFICATION
Our piercer/modifier is Kim. She has been piercing professionally since 2003 and performing scarification and skin removal since 2007. Kim has worked in several studios in the North-East and is well versed in all piercing procedures, from ear lobes to other more unusual piercings such as genitals, surface piercing, microdermals and custom work, which includes play piercing and corseting (please ask for details/prices).
Kim also offers scarification and skin removal - a consultation is required before carrying out the procedure. Scarification and skin removal is only available to over 18s as it is permanent. Stretching for body piercing is also available, the cost depends on the jewellery choice. There are photographs of all piercing and modification work in our photo albums.

All piercings and other modifications are handled in a professional and confidential manner. Any aftercare questions are covered in our aftercare leaflets (see our blogs) which are given after each piercing, but if you have a query about a specific problem or piercing, don't be afraid to ask.
Do you have a piercing that isn't straight/won't heal/hurt so much it has put you off ever wanting another? Pop in and see us, and we might be able to help. If you want something re-pierced, it is not a problem as long as any scarring is fully healed. If you've had a bad experience and are a little nervous about the whole process, Kim is very patient and will explain exactly what all the equipment does and why she is using it. Let us know if you don’t want to see the needle, and we'll keep it out of sight!
Body Piercing prices start at £10. Most other ear piercings are £15 (scaffold from £25), General body/facial piercing is £20, Tongue/surface/septum piercing is £30 and genital piercing is £40, Microdermals (aka Dermal Anchors) are £40. Please ask for prices on custom work, or call into the studio for a chat.
Discount MAY be given for multiple piercings.

We only use single-use needles for piercing. As mentioned, WE DO NOT USE GUNS as they are dangerous and can cause no end of problems (again, more info is available in our blogs). All body jewellery used is sterilized surgical grade Titanium. We cannot pierce you with a piece of jewellery you have purchased elsewhere.

We stock a range of body jewellery (including flesh tunnels/eyelets, Blackline jewellery, UV reactive items, various screw-ons, navel bars of all shapes and sizes, coloured/polished titanium in all shapes and sizes, silicone flesh tunnels, retainers and 'hider' plugs plus MUCH more). AVAILABILITY
We take bookings for tattoo work, as well as walk in appointments ('on the day'), however appointments get priority over walk-ins. We will try to fit you in as soon as possible (though it can sometimes be a few days wait during busy periods).
We request a minimum of £20 deposit (non-refundable if you don't attend your appointment, or if you cancel giving less than 24 hours notice) with all bookings, which is taken off the final fee of your tattoo. Sorry, but we can't take bookings through MySpace or over the phone. YOU DO NOT NEED AN APPOINTMENT FOR BODY PIERCING - JUST CALL IN!
OPENING TIMES
Monday to Saturday - 11am - 5pm. Sunday - Closed. Out-of-hours bookings are available, just ask.
Please telephone the studio in advance, to avoid disappointment, if making a special trip to see us, or if wanting to see a particular artist!
DIRECTIONS
On North road (the one with the bus station at the top), Go to Wetherspoons (The Waterhouse), Look across the road and there’s a cobbled street going up a hill (with a barber's shop on the corner), this is Neville St. We are up this street and over the road from The Fish Tank and Stanton's Fish and Chip Shop (formerly Bimbi's). Usually there is a red and white sign outside during opening hours.
Our staff are friendly and there to help. We will answer any and all questions you may have. Feel free to drop in or telephone us with any queries or alternatively send us message on MySpace. We always keep out customers updated with changes in the studio and important announcements through bulletins on MySpace, so be sure to add us to your friends list!
Young children and pushchairs are not permitted in our studio. This is for safety reasons.
The legal age a person must be at (or above) for tattoos is 18. Not a day under. It doesnt matter if your parents say it is OK, or if you've been tattooed before; YOU MUST BE 18 OR OVER TO BE TATTOOED!
For body piercing, you have to be 16 years of age (or above). For Genital piercing (male or female) you must be 18 years of age or over.
No exceptions. Please don't ask as refusal often offends.
These LAWS are for your safety as well as ours. Please bring valid photo ID (passport, full/provisional driving license, armed forces ID card, government issue ID or Citizen Card) with you. If you look under 21, you will be asked to show it.

hii, i was thinking of popping into the Durham shop next Friday about a tattoo, its small and on my ankle. I was wondering what the possibility was of going in on the same day booking an appointment and getting the tattoo on the same day, I would also want the numbing gel beforehand aswell
