Will Nicoll, Mark Mickens, and Matt Moss joined forces as Steel Toed Slippers on January 31, 2009, after many previous incarnations of the group stretching back for two years. Residing in Los Angeles, California, Steel Toed Slippers brings a refreshing twist on modern rock, with a hint of influences like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimi Hendrix, and King Crimson.
Nicoll and Moss along with a previous incarnation of the group led a successful live act through northern California, becoming Humboldt County's most ubiquitous up and coming band, appearing in a dozen articles in the local paper and several television programs, including a national CBS Battle of the Bands, where their video was played to a national audience and was voted well into the semifinals. They were honored to play alongside Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of the world renowned Little Feat in an intimate acoustic benefit for Lou Gehrig's Disease. They also engaged in a tour of Southern California, which managed to turn a profit, playing major venues such as The Whiskey A Go-Go and the Mint, and several local schools.
It was in early April of 2009 that Steel Toed Slippers caught the attention of Stephen Perkins, the drummer for Jane’s Addiction. Perkins invited the band to come and record at his home studio, appropriately named “Perkins’ Palace”, weeks before going on a massive tour with Jane’s. STS worked diligently around the clock for three days straight along with vocalist Ben Guez to create a three song EP that showcases their intense work ethic and drive to perpetually develop and expand their music. Today they are working hard at being the best they can, constantly rehearsing and always coming up with fresh new songs. They've secured a monthly gig at the world famous Knitting Factory and have managed to pack the house each and every month. Nicoll and Mickens currently attend Musician’s Institute while Moss attends Hamilton High Academy of Music. Look for these aspiring young talents on the typical LA gig circuit as well as unique gigs at schools, boardwalks, and anywhere else they can set up and lay it down!
