Steel Toed Slippers consists of William Nicoll on lead guitar, vocals and harmonica, Matt Moss on Drums, Bobby Amirkhan on Bass and Emily Totten on Vocals. Steel Toed Slippers came together November 2006 thanks to a music teacher at Mckinlyeville High School. Originally they were a power trio consisting of Will Nicoll, Matt Moss and Will Benedict (bass). In January the Tater Totten's, Emily and Sierra walked into the studio cold for an audition. In May of 2007, Wil Benedict, decided to leave the band to pursue his interest in technology and finish working on his degree at Humboldt State University. Without missing a beat, Bobby Amirkhan (3rd year music major at Humboldt State), AKA Bass Fury, stepped in and brought his unique style and brand to Steel Toed Slippers. In December of 2007, after a year of rehearsing and performing, Sierra decided she too, wanted to pursue other interests and left Steel Toed Slippers. The rest is as they say, history.
In the past year, the Steel Toed Slippers have gained notoriety through out the West Coast Community, stretching from San Diego to Humboldt County. They have performed over one hundred gigs these past two years literally playing everywhere and anywhere possible. One of their first major accomplishments was to compete in a battle of the bands at their high school. There were 5 bands in the competition and Steel Toed Slippers took first place, earning them $200 and some studio time. From that studio time came their first professionally produced song, “Stencils”. A few weeks later, they entered another battle of the bands, this time it was at Humboldt State University. There were ten bands in this competition and all were college age or older. Once again, Steel Toed Slippers took first place with an overwhelming audience vote. This gained them a headline spot at the SLAM Festival at Humboldt State University along with $300. From there, Steel Toed Slippers went on to perform all over the county at various fund raising events, helping to raise over $10,000 for various non profits and local schools.
In May of 2007, Steel Toed Slippers were invited to be a part of a benefit show for The ALS Foundation (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) along with Legendary Little Feat guitarists, Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett. The show was a huge success and Steel Toed Slippers were invited back on stage for Paul and Fred’s encore, and together they did a rousing fifteen minute version of the classic Little Feat tune, Dixie Chicken.
Steel Toed Slippers are young (15, 16, 17 & 21) dedicated musicians, writing and performing original music, with a new and fresh sound. Individually they are accomplished musicians. Matt Moss (drums) has studied and performed with legendary rock n roll drummer Richie Hayward (Little Feat) and Stephen Perkins (Janes Addiction, Porno for Pyros), Bobby Amirkhan is a graduate of Humboldt State University with a degree in music. He has also studied and performed with the one and only Victor Wooten. Will Nicoll attends the California State Summer School for the Arts, and will be attending Musician's Institute this fall. Emily has performed at Reggae on the River with her grandfathers band, The Non Prophets. Some of their past performances include, a packed house at the Whisky A Go Go, Sacramento County Fair at Cal Expo and most recently, they kicked off the 30th annual Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa CA. Just recently the band entered into a National Competition that ultimately would have flown them to NYC to record and play live in one of NYC premier clubs. It was a contest sponsored by digital Cafe Tours (http://www.digitalcafetours.com). A few weeks back they announced the top fifty finalists and Steel Toed Slippers were among the top fifty. a few weeks later, they announced the top ten finalists and once again, Steel Toed Slippers were there.....That's as far as they went this time but hey top ten ain't bad!!! This fall the band is slated to start a college tour beginning in San Diego at San Diego State University.
Together they are committed and dedicated to a common goal. Together they will be taking the world by storm….If you are considering a band for your event, Steel Toed Slippers are sure to bring the house down!
