STEELY & CLEVIE Noted as the pioneers of dancehall, but certainly not limited to this genre, Steely & Clevie have worked together for over 30 years with domestic and international artists of many styles with great success. Steely was the original keyboard player with the Roots Radix Band which backed Gregory Isaacs, Bunny Wailer and numerous other artists both on tour and in the recording studio. Steely also played on a large number of hit recordings for various producers in the mid 70s to early 80's. Clevie started his musical journey as a member of the noted Browne musical family, beginning as lead singer of the Browne Bunch’s 1972 debu single “We’ve Got A Good Thing Going”. He was inspired by the professionalism of the group's producer Geoffrey Chung (a leading producer of his era) who would pay as much attention to the business as he would the production of music. According to Clevie, it was his early experience of Geoffrey's meticulous nature having a high demand for accuracy and quality (while keeping the groove) coupled with Steely's eclectic talent exposure all contributing to their melting pot of vibes and knowledge which has now propelled Steely & Clevie to become one of Jamaica’s leading production houses. Their independently gathered experiences however did not come together until 1974 when they were called on to work on songs produced by Augustus Pablo at the Harry J's Studio. At that time, we worked along with various other musicians. These sessions included tracks from Hugh Mundell's 'Africans Must Be Free' album. During the 80’s when digital dancehall was born, Steely & Clevie was employed as session musicians for King Jammy's, Bobby Digital,Techniques, Redman International, Music Works and Penthouse labels to name a few. It was during this era that these founding fathers and pioneers of dancehall Steely & Clevie produced and/or performed on up to 75% of the songs making it to top 100 positions on the end of year charts on the leading radio stations in Jamaica. Despite of being noted as dancehall pioneers, their production genius has landed them numerous reggae hits, including the ever popular Dawn Penn's 1992 rendition of NO,NO,NO (You Don't Love Me). Over the years they have either produced, remix or laid tracks for a vast number of local and international talent. These include - No Doubt, Billy Ocean, Back Street Boys, Heavy D & The Boyz, Caron Wheeler, Buju Banton, Capleton, Maxi Priest, Jimmy Cliff, Gregory Isaacs, Aswad, Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man, Mr Vegas, Tiger, Bounty Killa, Elephant Man, Benzly Hype, Alton Ellis, Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Garnet Silk, Bush Man, Dawn Penn, Ernie Ranglin, Spragga Benz, China Black, Ninja Man, Lady Saw, Mr G, Red Rat, Buccaneer, Red Necks, Sting, Annie Lennox, Barrington Levy and Mr Lexx, to literally name a few. Steely & Clevie's reggae production effort with Sean Paul and Sasha, (I'm Still In Love) has also done our reggae music fraternity and Jamaica proud having left another indelible mark on various international charts including the coveted Billboard charts. They offer production, mixing, remixing, composition and musical services. Clevie is the immediate past Chairman of the Recording Industry Association of Jamaica (RIAJam) where he still sits on the board. He also serves on the boards of Jamaica Music Society (JAMMS), Jamaica Signature Beats and serves on the Reggae Academy steering committee. Wycliffe 'Steely' Johnson, passed away on September 1st, 2009 leaving a significant legacy of music and influence sure to inspire multitudes for generations to come. Despite Clevie conceding that "life/music without Steely will never be the same", he remains confident in his ability to deliver much, more GREAT MUSIC to woo fans to the dance floor and provocative, food for thought lyrics to positively change nations. ..
