Dave's Interests

| General | Between playing in bands and whatever socialising my bank manager will allow me most of my spare time revolves around writing. I write consumer reviews for a number of on line sites based both in Europe and the Colonies, everything from films, books and music to history, religious theory, politics, travel and social comment. I also write reviews of local bands for Puttyfoot Promotions organised events as well as freelancing. My work has been found in such august journals as Pagan Dawn, The Sun, The Evening Advertiser, History Today, Current Archaeology, World in Common and DVDiva, as well as a number of local fanzines and the music section of the STFC program. On line reviews can be found at Ciao, Dooyoo, Epinions, Shvoong, and Helium, links to be found in my blog section and direct access to helium here.
I also have my own local music blog, as well as others. Check them out in the myspace blog area on this page, you might find something you like.
| | Music | New Model Army will always be number one, but there's a real scrap on for the runners up, Thin Lizzy (bless ya Phil), Sisters of Mercy, The Men They Couldn't Hang (the band that made me pick up the bass, one day they will let me put strings on it), The Mission, Blyth Power(what do you mean you are impervious to metaphor), HIM, The Damned, Jethro Tull (the most English of gents), Hanoi Rocks, Mostly Autumn, The Snakes (gotta mention the boys from Shitkicker, Alabama and now Cardiff apparently), The Levellers, All about Eve,Pendragon (and you told me there was never any money in music, Nick), The Tansads (turn on, tune up, drop out, be late), The Cult, Marillion, Dogs D'Amour, AC/DC, Big Country, Attila the Stockbroker (and Barnstormer), The Fish Brothers (stupid sods), Twelfth Night (too damn clever for your own good) Midnight Oil (for caring about the planet), Steve Earle, Beltane Fire, The Alarm...I could go on and on...but I'm not going to.
| | Movies | Blade Runner will never be beaten as a film and a warning to mans desire to play god, Withnail and I is the greatest British comedy ever made (Camberwell Carrot anyone?) but then again there's always Shaun of the Dead ("its not the end of the world"). Also we have Alien(s), Interview with the Vampire, Fight Club, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King, Near Dark and of course the LOTR Trilogy. The Matrix (just the first film), Finding Neverland (soppy sod), Pitch Black, Underworld,Sin City...blah blah blah | | Television | Not big on TV but Band of Brothers was so good I almost paid the license fee and Scrubs..obviously! In a world fixated by such innane shows as When Salad Attacks and Celebrity Shoe Size with Jeremy Spake, then having a TV is hardly an essential commodity.
| | Books | These days its really reference stuff, I'm fascinated by the reasons behind the kick start of civilization and so read a lot of early history. I also am trying to get to the bottom of the big questions, particularly the meeting point of science and religion, the clinical arrogance of the former and the blind faith of the latter are like two toddlers with loaded guns. The truth lies in the middle ground. Religion in general is a fascinating area for me as well, I see these creations as records of mans struggle to understand and justify his place in the universal scheme of things. Consequently I end up having heated arguments with those blinkered and devout Christian types that think they have found the answer. Tossers. Made a conscious effort to branch out into some older stuff and tried to get my head around Renes Descartes but feel that he should have got out the house more and if he was alive today would have gravitated towards train spotting. Similarly I think Freud didn't get asked to many dinner parties..."tell me about your Mother"..."shut up Siggy and pass the gravy" | | Heroes | They say you should never meet your heroes, so the ones still alive will go unmentioned but as for those long gone, Oliver Cromwell (warts and all....at least he tried): Richard III (so misunderstood):Wat Tyler(the original demo organiser): John Lilburne (if only...)Jean Champollion(for opening the literary doors to the past)Alfred Watkins (for a clear understanding of the ancient mind):Akhenaten(an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in...well bandages): Peter Cook and of course Spike Milligan (genius and madness are often one in the same) |

Dave's Blurbs |
About me:
After having graced the ranks of numerous bands whose names are now just distant memories, such as Acoustic Junkies, Buffalo Skinners, The Sun Devils and Steerpyke, today I find myself the proud owner of two bass playing jobs.
Kola Koca are a six piece band, based around the singer/song writer Ray Pierce and have been described as Pink Floyd meets the Waterboys, which takes some imagining, but I do see what they mean.

Who I'd like to meet:
